There are a variety of other ways to deploy the big nickel scheme. For example some teams will run a 3-3-5, 2-4-5, and even a 1-5-5. In the case of the Dallas Cowboys however, they tend to run the 4-2-5 big nickel look. Last year, the Cowboys line up with five or more defensive backs on 97.8% of their plays, and 38% of the formations were either a big nickel or big dime.

DBs Formation Snaps in %
4 DBs Base defense (2 CB, 2 S) 10 0.9%
5 DBs Nickel (3 CB, 2 S) 647 59.5%
Big Nickel (2 CB, 3 S) 208 19.1%
6 DBs Dime (4 CB, 2 S) 2 0.2%
Big Dime (3 CB, 3 S) 205 18.8%
Others 16 1.5%
Total 1088 100%

Focusing in on the 4-2-5 big nickel scheme deployed by Dan Quinn allows Dallas from a personnel perspective more flexibility at other positions including on the offensive side of the ball as well. The latest NFL collective bargaining agreement allows for teams to dress 48 players on game day as long as eight of those players are offensive lineman. This would leave 40 slots to fill out the rest of game day roster. With Dallas primarily using the big nickel scheme, this allows them to potentially dress only five linebackers for each game and address other depth issues across the team or even go heavy at a certain position each week depending on the strengths and weaknesses of each opponent they play.

Dallas Cowboys: Trade for Chuck Clark

Cowboys get: S Chuck Clark

Ravens get: 2023 fourth-round pick

One of the cleanest potential trades exists between two conference contenders. The Baltimore Ravens invested heavily into the safety position this offseason, signing free-agent Marcus Williams to a $70 million deal and drafting Kyle Hamilton in the first round. Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald even acknowledged there’s not a clear role for Chuck Clark after those moves.

Clark is set to receive a new contract after this season and would surely rather be in a situation where he can build value and cash in. Dallas has the perfect opening next to free safety Malik Hooker and versatile defender Jayron Kearse. The Cowboys saw both Keanu Neal and Damontae Kazee depart in free agency, and Clark could help fill the box safety role they split in 2021.

Clark and Kearse offer well-rounded skill sets that give defensive coordinator Dan Quinn more flexibility when moving each around. Both can cover tight ends in the slot, attack the line of scrimmage and functionally play two-high shells. Hooker would be relied upon more to play the ball and produce turnovers...

Now, this could make Stephen look a lot smarter now!

They have the Cowboys giving up a 4th rnd pick. That's comical. They not only have Wilson but also 3 big safeties who can run in Bell, Thomas & Coyle battling for 1-2 spots. And a LB in Cox who is the size of a big safety.

400 snaps go to the 3rd Safety in Quinn’s defense, so that's a key position. Time to invest more into the Safety position. 1 LB spot on this roster could disappear due to Big Nickel n Dime packages.

Can any one of the Mukuamu, Bell, Coyle n Thomas group match what Dono Wilson can do as the 3rd S?

Parsons
LVE
Cox
Harper
Gifford
I think Clark sits out the year. Storey Jackson on PS for a year, although I can see SJ replacing Gifford on the 53 too.

Dallas may be reluctant to part with draft picks to acquire a Safety, especially if everyone stays healthy.

Yeah I’m not real thrilled with throwing 4th round picks out the window for a safety when Kearse Hooker Wilson and the UDFA Bell waiting to start leveling revivers over the middle and collaring RB’s. Safety not a position with this roster I want picks disappearing over .

As far as LB Devin Harper can absolutely make the team and play game days as ST and depth at LB . Donovan Wilson & Anthony Brown were 6th rounders and I think Will McClay hit on another late pick .

I actually didn’t know you had to dress 8 offensive linemen. Wonder what the logic for that is?
I assume there is some reasoning for it but don’t get it

The current linebackers set to suite up game days, are;

Micah Parsons
Leighton Vander Esch
Jabril Cox
Luke Gifford

5 linebackers probably will be suiting up on game days?

Damon Clark
Isn’t he out?

Jabril Cox replaces Neal.

The other LB active last season was Bernard for special teams. They'll replace him with a udfa.

Clark is for next season.

When they decided to allow 48 active, they did it in part to allow teams to have 8 OL active.

Having only 7 active is dangerous to QBs. You could end up with a TE playing OG or OT...

The Cowboys are looking very good at safety. Now, how about one more big MLB or 1T?

Stephen Jones is not gonna trade for that contract- (nor would i) ,.. especially since we already has Parsons, Dlaw and now Williams on the scene.
Bears had an opt out for 2022 with R Quinn's contract, i wonder if the date-deadline has passed on that.

The percentages of top salaries are reaching the area that Stephen has been working towards for 20+ years.

so long as those percentage top salaries and contracts belong to his own players who Stephen considers 'core players" . .. .. he believes in re-signing his own core players.

Only a trade that is a bargain deal such as the one that brought Robert Quinn to Dallas, would Stephen consider differently .. that's a Money Ball deal
