Nice nickname. Don't think I've heard that before. Came across this video and thought I'd share it here. Martin was before my time and I don't think I've ever really watched him play. Dude looks like he was a beast. I'm rethinking my lists of great Cowboys defenders now.

It's really wild as a kid who grew up with the '90's team to see the stat showing Dallas is still 3rd all time in playoff wins. Those old teams must've been fun to watch.

I was a kid growing up watching Martin play. Watch some of his highlights, he doesn't look happy. Had 23 sacks in 1977. To me that's the sack record. Even though it wasn't an official stat, if he got 23, and they're all on video, 23 is the record IMO.

Harvey Martin is the "unofficial" NFL single season sack leader. It's a robbery how the NFL refuses to honor him as such simply because Quarterback sack totals didn't become an official NFL statistic until 1982; that's extremely unfortunate given the plethora of outstanding pass rushers who toiled in the NFL long before then, especially Harvey "Too Mean" Martin who accumulated 23 sacks in 1977.

I remember when he started playing for the Cowboys. he flashed his aggressive style instantly.

The team of the late 60's that played Green Bay twice and went to two SB's in a row was getting old. Real old. All of them. Eight of 11 defrensive startrers were 28 or older. The average age of their starting linebackers were 35. Half of their starting secondary, the Pro Bowlers, were 33. Bob Lilly was 35.

The defensive ends were younger but they were not athletic head hunters, they were trained to stop the run. They were able to get to the QB occasionally but that was because their offense was so good that the opponent was almost always playing from behind.

Martin was drafted in 1973 and added instant excitement. Keep in mind thee was no such thing as "in the grasp", helmet to helmet, and the much wider range of activities that constituted roughing the passer.

Under those circumstances, Martin was a destroyer right out of the gates. Landry would bring him in to replace Larry Cole on long third downs and he had QB's running for their lives because Martin was not a gentle tackler. In his rookie year playing strictly on third and long plays, Martin had 9 sacks.

Martin injected instant excitement and when his partner, "Too Tall" Jones was drafted by the Cowboys #1 overall, the Cowboys had two sets of DE's. Cole and Toomay stopped the run, the were the pair called "Thunder". Martin and "Too Tall" would come in on long passing players before the other two retired. They would get to the QB quick. They were the "Lightning".

Sports journalist that don't do enough research make the mistake of labeling Too Tall and Martin as "Thunder and Lightning" and they are incorrect.

Martin had a mean streak on the field....and close to the field. When the final game of the 79 season was against the Washington Unspeakables and the Cowboys won by a point in the final minute, it made the Cowboys division champions and eliminated the Commanders from the playoffs. After the game Martin threw a wreath into their lockeroom.

When the Cowboys put White on the defensive line he played next to Martin on the right side. White took a lot of double teams and this made Martin even deadlier.

The Cowboys won Super Bowl 12 and the two of them were Co-MVP's. The Broncos starting QB only played in the 1st half. His QB rating for that SB was 0.0. That's right, a Super Bowl starting QB had a rating of absolute zero against the defense.

........Another great Cowboy robbed by biased HOF voters.

Great player that should be in the Ring of Honor and the Hall of Fame. If Lawrence Taylor is in the HOF after drugs and being caught with a teenage prostitute, Harvey Martin known issues should not deter him from the honors he deserves.

I sort of remember the "too mean" nickname. However, media and fans took off with "Martinized" which was said when he sacked the QB. "Martinized" was a play on Martinizing Cleaners that Martinized your clothes dry clean.

Harvey "Martinize Em" Martin is what I remember.

Poor Martin. Had he starred in L.A. or New York he'd certainly be in the HOF.
Being in a media center --- and not in small (then) market Dallas --- always helps.

But weren't they America's Team? I guess it's easy to take current media for granted. But how can you ignore 23 sacks in 14 games?

"Unlike Ware though, Harvey Martin accomplished that feat in only 14 games! In fact, Harvey Martin is one of only 2 players not named Deacon Jones who managed to record 20 sacks or more in a 14 game season according to this new unofficial data."

There are all sorts of differences between eras that are hard to quantify and normalize out of the statistics. But the number of regular-season games is probably the simplest.

Just calculate the stat per the number of regular season games that season. That doesn't make for a perfect comparison either, as keeping up a high average longer is harder to do, but it's much harder to amass stats in games that aren't played.

They can and do ignore comparable talent and stats.
Egads, the media then and today is N.Y., Chicago, L.A. and the media louts cannot see beyond 500 miles of their universes.
In me mind, Dallas was and remains a 2nd tier TV and media center and players in Dallas and the smaller markets remain outliers.

I met Harvey when I was a teenager, December 16, 1979.... it was right after the comeback against the Skins. A night I will never forget. Roger Staubach's career ended in retirement 3 months later. Man, I was so crushed,

They were. So many great memories. So many frustrations. They should have won more super bowls. Just like the 90s teams.

However I'll never forget the day Staubach retired I told my dad the run was over.
My disillusionment begin with free agency. Football was simply better before. I understand why but I don’t like it. The worst result is I don’t care about the players like before. Their hired guns. I still watch for the frequent chunk play circus catch. There’s still the evolving game calling. They’ve changed I’ve changed.

Harvey Martin was a beast. One of the best pass rushers in league history and brought tons of attitude and leadership with him along the way. One of my favorite players of all time. True Cowboy. . . . And MEAN.

Another Cowboy responsible for a rule change or enforcement, the Harvey “Head Slap” Martin rule.

They also could have added the “No Funeral Wreaths in the Visitor’s Locker Room’ rule for him.

There was no excuse for the NFL waiting until 1982 to record sacks; and there was no excuse for being retroactive about it. Considering how much footage NFL films gathered plus what the individual teams had. They could have probably gone back to at least 1970 and gotten solid numbers.

They just chose not to. Spend more money on their execs and office buildings and so on.
