Yes, I would agree some players need to be protected from injury. But if they aren't practicing and not getting the proper conditioning, wouldn't that make them more injury prone?
Hope he is working out.
Just don't need him getting banged up in practice

Our season success is based in large part by this OL. If Smith and or Martin is out an extended time our hope is limited.

this guy has been holding our seasons hostage for years now. Next year we move Tyler smith to LT if he can handle it and draft a guard or Center in the first round.

We can always move Martin to LT if Tyler isnt ready.

Tyron needs reps and, more importantly, he needs to learn how to work next to the rookie. I don't think throwing him in cold week 1 is going to help him, our OL, or the productivity of the offense.
Honestly, anyone who disputes this is not familiar with how an Oline works.
They are a unit acting as One.
You can't just start inserting guys with no feel for the other and not expect consequences.

Look at how the McGovern project worked in-season last year.

It's not good practice.

The Line has to become a Whole.

And especially we have a rook integrating into the starting lineup and Steele trying to get more into the flow on the other side.

Really now.

His practice time can be minimized but not completely taken out. It will be good learning experience for Tyler- watching Tyron and Williams ( by going against Tyron ) . Because in NFL injuries happen , but no one can predict when , what if we hold him out of practice all the time and in the game , he gets injured early ? it is not predictable.

He made himself great by changing his body. His frame wasn’t meant to carry that much muscle and weight. Many athletes have that problem these days and they are often injured.

Veteran days off? Yes. Exempt from all practices? No. You’ve got to get some practice in, especially on the Oline. The Oline has to have their timing down and they have to be synchronized. Plus you have to get in football shape or you’re more likely to get injured otherwise. All players have to practice some.

100%. There's no better example of the importance of continuity than the O Line. One position change and things quickly go off the rails more times than not. I really think some under appreciate how great Smith is, even at less than 100%.

There's only one Tyron Smith whether he's an aging monster on our OL or not. He'll be a stalwart LT, as long as his health allows that to be. :flagwave:
No Cowboys of the past, or present, would be advised to allow one of his abilities to wander off, without allotting him all the time he has left.

It's been said a million times, going half speed and trying to protect oneself is the most sure-fire way to get hurt.

The idea of resting the vet is good, but yeah it could be detrimental.

The other point not being discussed is how he usually comes back slow from injury and it takes him a game or two to hit his stride.

Yes, also....if Tyler Smith is backup option #1, that means he isnt taking reps at LG next to the center, which throws that off that much more.

I get the idea of wanting to rest Tyron, but not taking practice reps at all isn't gonna fly in this case.

Because our Oline depends on him playing. Once he gets hurt, the Oline goes into the toilet. Then the team goes into the toilet. And he is no longer dependable.
Who replaces him that you will get anywhere near the level of production from when he does play, even if it's only 10 games. In other words, lets say he's no longer on the team, how bad is our line at that point?

SO the plan is to have him ready for the NFL season by....sitting on the bench? Um...I know he's an experienced vet....but will that body be toughened up enough?

Seems to me if you are worried about getting hurt in practice runs......throwing him in live games expecting him to NOT be hurt...sounds odd. Like making a soldier without boot camp.

He's not sitting on the bench, he's still going to be training 4-5 hours a day it will just be in a more controlled environment. Not only

This method for aged athletes is actually becoming way more popular in the last 5 years for high collision sports.

Robbie Lawler for example whose fighting on this weekends pay per view stopped sparring around 2010 and he said it added at least 6-7 years to his career by doing this

Tyron has never been the guy that shows up out of shape, from eating hot wings, burgers and burritos all off season, so not to concerned with TS being the professional in that regard.
Tyrons biggest knock is that you can pencil him in every season for missed time, and its understandable, and he should be "preserved" for as long as possible.
Obtaining a top end LT requires the same draft capital as a top drafted QB every year, so by all means allow Tyron the key to the club house.

Tyron already knows what time it is, and he will have plenty of time to get up to starting LT caliber game speed and condition.
Preservation of our only true starting LT should be the number one priority at this point.
