Next year’s college class looks strong. It’s no secret how much of the NFL saw the 2022 draft—one that had some depth but lacked star power at the top. At this early juncture, it looks like ’23 should make up for it. National Football Scouting, which runs the combine, just distributed its annual summer grades for teams. Here are the top 25 (third-year players hadn’t been included in the past, but now are; and positions listed are NFL projections).

  1. Jalen Carter, DT, Georgia
  2. Will Anderson, DE, Alabama
  3. Tyree Wilson, DE, Texas Tech
  4. Bryce Young, QB, Alabama
  5. Bryan Bresee, DE, Clemson
  6. Michael Mayer, TE, Notre Dame
  7. Will McDonald, DE, Iowa State
  8. Kelee Ringo, CB, Georgia
  9. Isaiah Foskey, DE, Notre Dame
  10. Jahmyr Gibbs, RB, Alabama
  11. Brett Johnson, DT, Cal
  12. Colby Wooden, DE, Auburn
  13. Derick Hall, DE, Auburn
  14. Will Levis, QB, Kentucky
  15. C.J. Stroud, QB, Ohio State
  16. Joey Porter, CB, Penn State
  17. Nolan Smith, DE, Georgia
  18. Cam Brown, CB, Ohio State
  19. Andre Carter, DE, Army
  20. Ali Gaye, DE, LSU
  21. Dawand Jones, OT, Ohio State
  22. Tyrique Stevenson, CB, Miami
  23. Kenny McIntosh, RB, Georgia
  24. Jaxon Smith-Njigba, WR, Ohio State
  25. Zach Charbonnet, RB, UCLA
The one thing that’s interesting is that the grades don’t exactly match the way the guys are stacked here, with the grades factoring in positional value. In the system that NFS uses, a grade of 7.0 or higher makes a player blue-chip (defined as a truly elite player). Carter graded at 7.5, Anderson at 7.3. Grades of 6.5 and above are red-chip (defined as the kind of player you win because of, rather than win with), and 10 more players (Wilson, Young, Bresee, Mayer, McDonald, Ringo, Foskey, Gibbs, Levis and Stroud) made that cutoff.

Jalen Carter, DT, Georgia
Some will call me crazy, but this kid has Reggie White potential. Grown man strength and power, cat-like quickness, and still figuring things out.

Will Anderson, DE, Alabama
I see a better version of Randy Gregory. You may think he's vulnerable against the run but he's so quick and fluid it's hard to get hands on him.

Michael Mayer, TE, Notre Dame
There's been a bunch of "Baby Gronk" comps the last few years; I've been guilty of it as well. With that being said, his physicality is something else. I'm not sure how you defend him.

Kelee Ringo, CB, Georgia
If you read my posts, you know Kelee was one of my case studies for one of my graduate school projects. He was a Sophomore starter on a NFL-packed defense last year. He'll have less help (Georgia has plenty of "next guy up" players) but he has elite size and speed for the position. I want to see his technique and consistency improved upon this year.

Joey Porter, CB, Penn State
Joey Porter JUNIOR. Feel old yet?

Andre Carter, DE, Army
My Pet Cat. I am expecting (hopeful) that he spent this off-season improving his pass-rushing tools. Last year he just kind of beat people with his length and athleticism.

Jaxon Smith-Njigba, WR, Ohio State
Went absolutely bonkers in the Rose Bowl. I expect him to put up huge numbers with CJ Stroud and that offense this year.

I want to know who is the 32nd player. As that is where we will be selecting at. And not via trade.
