on 5 July, with collisions at unprecedented energy levels at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) marking the launch of the new physics season at CERN’s flagship accelerator.

will reach a new energy world-record of 13.6 trillion electronvolts (13.6 TeV) in stable-beam collisions, marking the start of data-taking for the new physics season, called Run 3.

Does anyone keep up with CERN, or have any thoughts on what they are doing good/bad?

cutting edge research is vital to the future. This is an area that can assist in the creation of the first fusion reactor, which will be critical as we reach for the stars.

I was always very angry that it was not located in Texas when the idea to build one was floated. a bunch of short sighted idiots scuppered that idea.

The worlds largest and most powerful particle accelerator and largest machine man has ever made. Located in Saint-Genus-Poilly, Switzerland. The town where CERN is located was called “Appoliacum”. In Roman times where a temple existed in honor of Apollyon the Destroyer (Apollo), where the Romans believed was a gateway to the underworld.

The Superconducting Supercollider that was cancelled after partial construction in Texas would have dwarfed CERN in size and power if I recall.

China has announced that it will begin construction of the world's largest particle collider in 2020. According to officials, the subterranean facility will be at least twice the size of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in Switzerland

According to the report authored by the institute, the upcoming collider will be over five times more powerful and over 20 miles in diameter.

That's 62.83 miles in circumference. The Superconducting Supercollider would have been 54.1 miles in circumference, or 17.22 miles in diameter. Given that it took nearly 4 billion dollars to dig only 14 miles of it before it was cancelled, that's a huge investment on China's part.

That seems like a lot, but had ours not been cancelled, a lot of research money would have been pumped into it and the economy around it. It was very short sighted. The question is whether or not China will make theirs available for rent for international use.

At some point there has to be diminishing returns on whether it's worth making them that large. They already get particles in CERN close to the speed of light.

Why? Are you conCERNed?

Has anything of scientific relevance even come from the super collider?

I know they found evidence for the Higgs Boson. Which I read was important for physicists.

The rest of the stuff is way over my head in understanding it’s importance.

I think proving a theory like the existence of a "God particle" or Higgs boson has tremendous value to scientists. It's similar to discovering electrons, neutrons and protons. It advances our understanding of physics which could lead to practical applications in the future. It is just a step in a never-ending process of understanding how stuff works.
