We had a shot to bring in some cheap Dak competition. Never let anyone rest on their laurels. Especially when those laurels aren't exactly established.
Every other team in the NFL had the same chance, most of whom have QB's no better than or below Dak's level. Accordingly, the majority of the NFL didn't think Mayfield was worth pursuing. That's why the Panthers were able to get him cheap.

I think it’s more likely Mayfield had final say and knew his chances of starting were as close to a sure bet as he could find.

I don't think that's it because only top veteran players are able to negotiate the ability to limit who they can be traded to, and Mayfield is still on his rookie contract.

Realistically it's pretty rare for any team that feels it has a strong, established QB to bring in real competition. Other teams with QB's at or below Dak's level didn't trade for Mayfield either.

I’m not disagreeing, I realize it’s prima donna multimillionaire people management these days, but not long ago Jimmy brought in Walsh to compete with the country’s top overall draft pick, had Aikman wondering if he lost his job to the hot hand in Buerlein. Aikman and Jimmy are tight as can be now. You just don’t see that enough anymore.

Yeah, but he can still choose to report or not. Last chance to be a starter, I don’t blame him.

If that's true, then that's relatively new. They used to do that all the time years ago. I think they no longer do this because in most cases teams can't afford to pay two good QBs.

They did it constantly years ago. It makes sense. Not just for competition, but in case your starter goes down. In both of the super bowls Jim Plunket won, he was the backup coming in for the starter. Jim Hostetler was backup to Phil Simms.

You're never going to get an outstanding situation like Montana and Young, because most backups that good want to start. But in today's NFL, if the QB goes down, the season usually goes with it.

Watson is a bad guy no doubt. Browns are in way too deep to turn back now. He will play for them and probably at some point this year.
They payed the price, it may be wise or very dumb, its about a 50/50 percentage of fail vs success.
I give the organization thumbs up for taking the knee deep in crap chance,, damn wouldnt make that same call though if GM.

So the Panthers have both QB’s that led the league in INT’s since 2018 and some think they got a steal.

My comment was about it being rare for a team to bring in real competition was specific to situations where a team feels it has a quality, established starter. Aikman wasn't established and hadn't even played in the NFL when Walsh was taken in the supplemental draft. I do agree that it was a surprise that Walsh was taken in the supplemental draft after they just drafted Aikman, but I supposed Jimmy wanted to double down on QB's to make sure he had at least one quality starter to build a team with.

Beuerlein doesn't fit either because he wasn't signed with the intent to be competition for Aikman, he was only signed to be a quality backup. I don't think Aikman was really in jeopardy of losing his job to Beuerlein anyway. I think it was just a short term thought about not changing things while the team was winning rather than a thought about Beuerlein becoming the starter longer term

From being picked first overall to being traded for a conditional 5th rounder 2 years away.

Man, and here I was mad at Coop traded for a 5th.

BUT... Going from the 1st overall pick to traded for a future 5th rounder gives whole new meaning to failure as to return on investment. And now, this same Cleveland F.O. "possibly" might hafta wait another year after their guy whom they've already guaranteed 240 mil sat out last year as well.

Just some insane risk vs. reward gamble the likes of which I've never seen. Gives me a whole new perspective on Go Big or Go Home.
