This happens a lot with folks of a younger generation attempting to compare players from bygone eras to current guys. It's natural to think that because "athletes get bigger, stronger, faster every year" that the current guys are the best. The only problem is that the biggest, fastest and strongest are almost never actually the best. And that goes for any era. Donald is not the biggest, strongest or fastest at his position.. but he is the best. People continually underrate the fact that it is what's inside a dude is what makes him great. Far more than his physical traits. Those don't hurt, but they simply do not tell the whole story.

His size is not elite but his athletic measurables sure are.

"Winning" against Aaron Donald is limiting his effectiveness and stopping him from dominating, not shutting him down altogether. Larry Allen would be the right guy to put in that position. Donald would still make some plays, but Allen would have the quickness, strength and nasty streak to keep Donald from having the kind of huge impact he usually does.

"Winning" against Larry Allen is keeping him from dominating to the point you are taken out of the game almost completely. Donald would be the right guy to put in that position, although if a team were smart they would move Donald around so some of the time he could go head to head with players he could easily dominate. Against Allen he wouldn't be shut down completely, but he wouldn't dominate the way he is used to

Ya didn’t he frustrate the minister of defense a lot ?
That was really Erik Williams before Williams had his car wreck and while Reggie was still an Eagle. I'm not saying Allen didn't do well against him, but he didn't go head to head with him as much as Williams did, and Williams is the one that built the reputation on being the guy that Reggie had the most difficulty with.

I would take Larry in that matchup because he is every bit as quick and fast as Donald but 50 pounds heavier and much stronger. Larry dominated a lot of guys with Donald's level of ability. Several of them are already in the Hall of Fame.. but can be found on the business end of a Larry Allen pancake..
Not saying LA wouldn't handle him, but there haven't been "a lot of guys with Donald's level of ability." Especially all in one era.

I'd go out on a limb and say more people would have Donald as the best DT ever before they'd have Allen the best G ever.

Gotta disagree on this one. I believe LA is one of the few that could claim to be the best Offensive Linemen to ever play the game. Remember he played multiple positions & excelled at all of them. HOFers openly talk of just hoping to survive against him.

AD is a tremendous player .... but he isn't in the conversation as greatest DT ever. In a run first league, his value would suffer.

No brainer.....Larry Allen....hands down!!
LA in his prime versus AD in his prime is not even close. That is how dominant Allen was. LA made many great DT's look weak when they went against him. I wonder if some younger fans realize what LA could do to all NFL players.

For those that didn't get to watch Larry destroy people google videos and watch him pancake NFL players.

I think you're underrating Donald a lot.

7x first team all-pro in only 8 years, 8 Pro bowls, 3x DPOY, and consistently ranked 1st in the NFL's top 100 that is voted on by the his peers.

He's also only 31, so he's just going to add to that resume.

When all is said and done he will clearly be the best DT ever, but many, including myself, believe him to already be.
