Agree with those who say not much difference between Payton and McCarthy. Jerry brought back Skip Peete of all people. Not hard to see him going after Payton if Big Mac fails. Jerry likes his boys.

All things considered though, not sure why people would knock Payton's hiring. Unless you want to keep Big Mac in there and give him more years, you're not going to find many candidates more qualified than Payton.

Unless you're going to hire Bill Belichick or luck out on one of the LA Ram/Cincy Bengals 30-year-old wonder boy coaches, it's not a bad hire at all.

Big difference from where I am standing. Payton is a true offensive mind.

We all can dream, I guess. :muttley:

152-89, 1 SB, 9-8 in postseason, 4 losing seasons
143-92-2, 1 SB, 10-9 in postseason, 3 losing seasons

One of those is Payton, the other is McCarthy. How does Payton have so much "leverage and gravitas" in comparison?

Sean has 143 total wins.

For the Cowboys, Sean Payton would not be an upgrade over Mike McCarthy

The takeaway here isn’t that I think McCarthy is a better coach than Payton, but just that there’s not a meaningful enough difference between the two. And, for what it’s worth, Payton has made it clear he’s not interested in coaching anywhere for at least the 2022 season. The NFL’s own data on timeout usage from earlier this year found that Payton wastes timeouts much more often than McCarthy, and Payton’s public frustrations with officials have been immeasurable.

So how exactly is Payton different from McCarthy? What does he bring to the Cowboys that McCarthy doesn’t already? Because when you look at things from all angles, it becomes hard to find a really good answer. Payton might do really well if he were coaching the Cowboys; he might even match McCarthy’s 12 wins from 2021, something Payton has only done twice in the last nine years.

If Dallas gives away draft picks for this overrated coach, I'm done.

It really wouldn't be much of an upgrade at HC from what we have now. :omg:

This guy might actually have the leverage and gravitas to keep Jerry in check,,, though even Parcels had a tough time with that.

He wont come here if his goals after retirement are still about sporty success. No good coach would come here with those ambitions.

If he decides to come here its because of the money he will earn here. And by saying that he will have no motivation to keep JJ in check.

Remember DC is always the last stop for HCs. After that its either downhill or retirement.

I have no doubt if McCarthy falls flat on his face that Jerry will go after Payton. They have a good relationship, so I would think there would be mutual interest.

Also, Jerry turns 80 in October.

Time is a luxury big Mike doesn’t have.

Sean Payton is a true innovator and offensive mind. Using all his tools in the toolbox and finding a role for them. He is a better coach than MM no question about it. One of the best in the league. He would be the perfect pairing with Quinn and coming in during the optimum time if he came in next season. He could revamp the rushing attack and gear the offense to his liking with some great pieces to work with already here. Some minor tweaking and another good offseason and we could be right in the hunt for the next 4 years.
Would you be willing to give up two 1st round picks for him?

while I'm neutral on him coming to Cowboys I've been saying since day one when Payton hinted at stepping away in NO he and Jerry have already planned his move to Dallas.
He's now gone from saying he was burnt out to now saying he will be back next year and we havent even gone through 1 off season (pretty quick recovery).
Interesting how he didnt just ask NO if he could step back for 1 year and how NO isnt in any of his future plans. I think the 2 clubs have already worked out the trade and willing to bet Jerry has overpaid
still hoping it works out tho

For my take on who the better HC is, it depends on who is the OC and who is calling plays. If Jerry is going to insist on keeping KM calling plays, I would rather have MM just continue with what he's doing... If Sean Payton is calling plays, then yes, I would rather have Sean Payton here...

Sean Payton has become a player who can't be trusted. At this point, give me McCarthy over this game player in Payton.

2 way street as I see it.

If Payton's intentions are all about a nice final retirement paycheck like McFatty, nothing will change.

If Jerry's conditional hiring of Payton included relinquishing most team control a la Parcells, then there could be possible culture change.

Hard to picture Payton as a McFatty type Yes Man who sells out all his integrity just for the money, but money does tend to change a lot of people I guess.

So anything's possible I guess.

Most important though, gotta maintain that relevance.

Of course Payton calls plays. Thats what he does.

Just as with the other 20 threads on this topic, I'm still not sure why we would think he would accept a position where he can't have the full control he would want. He's already said that's important, and I can't believe Jerry would relinquish that, or even if he said he would that Payton would believe it.
