Some note from todays practice. Of particular note to me is talk of just how physical the defense is practicing. It is music to my ears as an ex safety/LB.

  • Things got a bit chippy on Tuesday, with the defense attempting to set the tone on more than one occasion. From running back Malik Davis and the offense (including Dak Prescott) taking exception to a Davis handoff that saw his defender get very physical in taking him to the ground out of back, to safety Tyler Coyle knifing through traffic at full speed to lay a hit on Rico Dowdle that sounded like a sonic boom - followed by Coyle standing over Dowdle in taunting fashion -- the Cowboys defense looks to be preparing for the season with a very sizable chip on their shoulder. Davis came back a few plays later to lower the shoulder on Coyle in one of the most physical runs of camp with both players going to the ground.
Also, I liked reading about DaRon Bland. Several times already, we’ve heard about him playing well, even as early as it is. Jourdan Lewis in particular said he’s going to make the team and help out right away… or something to that effect.

Here’s what they say about him:

  • DaRon Bland continues to play above his current level of notoriety, which is to say he's one you should keep an eye on. The rookie fifth-round pick has done a really good job at whatever receiver assignment he's been given, from slot coverage to popping outside for X and Y coverage duties, routinely blanketing whichever wideout is in front of him - often forcing the quarterback to move on in the read progression. A former First-Team all-conference player, Bland is quickly catching the eye of the defensive staff.

Going to practice yesterday...i just kept saying...I can't believe how big these dudes are. Our secondary are a bunch of monsters. We have guys like Galli, Big John and Bo.

I expect this defense to be toward the top of the league this year.

  • The battle continues at left guard, where both Connor McGovern and Tyler Smith got first-team reps. McGovern seems to working with the 1s to begin practice but Smith isn't too far behind. For now it appears the Cowboys seem focused on keeping Smith at guard, especially with the pads on.
Just leave him at LOG please!!!!!

I also expect the defense to be better than last year… maybe significantly better. What does that mean for their ranking in the league? I have no idea, but I do expect improvement.

Heck, just having year two of Quinn in Dallas should yield improvement. And I really like the guys they’ve been bringing in. I also expect improvement from Diggs, Odighizuwa, Parsons, Golston, Joseph, Wright, etc.

I can’t wait for the preseason games.

Bland only to get treated like Wright
I think this is significantly more praise (and players praising) than what Wright got last year… at least as far as I can remember.

What I can tell you is that I, personally, am a lot more excited about Bland than I ever was for Wright.

I did (and do) have hopes for Wright but I never got the feeling that we might have found something like I feel about Bland.

It still means nothing until he goes out and performs in games… but it is a very good sign.

The CB room is getting crowded.

They only kept 6 CB’s last years roster (7 if you count CJ Goodwin)
1-Diggs
2-Brown
3-JLewis
4-Joseph
5-Wright
6-Bland

not to mention Keyron Brown & Isaac Taylor-Stewart have also been mentioned favorably.

This defense has a ton of potential to be great. And they have a DC to make it happen. It’s exciting.

Makes me wonder.. that maybe we need to trust that they have a young WR (or 2) to help on the offensive side

Sounds about time to play our great corner depth to our advantage just like we did with Charvarius Ward.

I think the six you listed, plus Goodwin, is probably correct. For me, that means four safeties is probable (Kearse, Hooker, Wilson, Bell), but that leaves out Mukuamu and Coyle.

With Kearse and Bell also "linebackers," I think we go short there to fix the numbers (Parsons, LVE, Cox, Gifford, Harper), especially with Clark starting off on PUP and able to be added later.

So keep more. It's stupid to just keep 6.

Man you guys really get sucked in to the same stuff you always read this time of year.

Hey, who's on the T.J. Vasher train? What about Dennis Houston?

As far as them making the roster? I don't see any reason for anyone to think that after a few padded practice. Being excited to hear good things about them? I think all of us should feel that way.

I've seen enough players look good in practice and disappear in the preseason games to know that it doesn't mean all that much right now. It would be like panicking over Garibay and Hallelujah missing kicks in practice right now. Let's give it a little time and see what happens, but that doesn't mean I'm not concerned about it.

As far as Bland goes, I do expect him to make the roster as a draft pick unless he plays poorly, which doesn't seem to be happening right now. The UDFAs have to win their jobs, while the draft picks have to not lose theirs.

Hard to judge anything without seeing them for sure. Ready for PS just to know. Can’t wait for the typical score 9 points and lose and get no real feel how any of them play together……
