Would it be best to extend Pollard now or wait?

Pollard is expected to take on a larger role this season in the offense. Particularly the passing game. But who knows if his role increases or if he's utilized more often intentionally. Jerry has already said Zeke needs to be the vocal point of the offense.

What do you think is best in terms of long term roster planning: giving Pollard an extension now or wait and give him a new contract in the offseason?

Spotrac has Pollard's market valued at 3 years $19 million. With an average salary of $6.3 million per year.

From what I've seen these valuations tend to be off some and usually on the low end of what deals players actually end up getting. So lets says he'd sign a 3 year deal for $22 million/16 million guaranteed today.

I think it would be in the best interest of the front office to extend Pollard now. Pollard has proven that he is reliable with ball security and has big play potential. It would help solidify the RB position next year since Zeke is more than likely gone after the end of this season. With no RB emerging as a future starter in training camp, the RB position will need to be a priority in the draft next year or through free agency. With the retention of Pollard and a premium pick (round 1-3) the RB position would be set for the 2023 and 2024 seasons.

Of course the argument for waiting is that if Pollard gets paid now, he won't be as hungry as he would be in a contract year. If there were questions surrounding his work ethic or grit to play, I'd understand. But he's missed only 1 game in the 3 years since he's been here and that was after he had an injury that could have kept him out for months and his availability to play depended on pain tolerance. He was back in action after missing only one week. He has proven he has grit. A lot of it. And that is a key trait for a successful RB.

Resign Pollard today.

I'd wait lets see if he can stay healthy all year with the expanded workload. Draft Zeke's replacement next year.. I would however bring in another RB this year.. Rico Suave ain't cutting it

I would have extended him already. I think his price tag only goes up if he excels again even if in limited opportunities and if Zeke doesn’t bounce back and we move on from him, having Pollard in place would be a very good thing

You hope he has a great year and you cash in on that third round comp pick. At least that's what I'm hoping for. I don't think he's going to give you 8 years of production with no drop off, even a change of pace back, and I seriously doubt he signs a 2-year extension at this point.

Let the season play out, then see what happens.
Fans are too emotional on players as to cut or sign or extend.

If you sign him now, then if he is not the RB many thinks he is. Then what? Will the same fans that want him turn on him?
Jerry is a genius for signing him, then Jerry sucks for signing him. :muttley:

You can get a guy like Pollard every year in the mid rounds of the draft

Yep, like BooBoo likes to say, keep your powder dry. Pollard is a type you can replace whether it is in the draft or FA. Ideally i would love the Cowboys to get Bijan Robinson from Texas, but he may have a great enough year to go high in the second round. Maybe even first but i think teams may not want to draft a RB in the first.

The simple answer is that Pollard has no reason to sign unless it's for big money.

As you said he's expected to take on a bigger role. Why would he sign a low ball contract now when he can wait and probably earn more?

The strangest thing fans do is assume that every player will just sign any contract placed in front of him.

In my opinion, when it comes to contracts that aren't huge, it really doesn't matter when you sign them. The penalty is minimal. Of course it would be cheaper now, but by how much? However, if the Cowboys don't pay him now, and he proves to not only be a decent RB, but also a good slot WR, he won't be on the Cowboys next year.

That said, I would not pay him beyond market value now.

To a true Bland Man, extend him now before Sequel breaks down and Pollard has a breakout year.
Even with Sequel healthy, Pollard is A-list backup. Teams without proper RB backup are doomed. Domed, I tell you!
Good chaps all. Carry on, then. Watch the reeds going uphill, set compass 12 degrees west.

Depends on what your going to do with Zeke.

I don't believe the FO is going to cut him.

So do you want to tie up that kind of money in the RB spot? I don't.

No one wants to tie up big money on RB.
Ideally, comrades, we should not.
But realistically we need to.

You want to wait until Zeke breaks down and Pollard, at last, shows extended play?
Pennywise and hound foolish.
