Would it be best to extend Pollard now or wait?

They needed to get a back in the mid rounds this year.

Once that failed, it secured a pay day here for Pollard.

They compound one mistake with another around here and I dont see that ending any time soon.

Nothing against Pollard, but there's no real sense in investing cap dollars or high draft picks in the position with today's rules. Grab two mid round types every few years and you're good to go, but Jerry lahks jursuh sailin triplets. Thats what made all those SB teams he built all by himself!

We overplayed for a #1 RB so why not overpay for a #2 RB. It makes perfect sense.

I seriously doubt it makes any difference when he gets paid.
Either way, his future will be assured, if and when it occurs.

It's impossible to tell beforehand what kind of results one might expect.

If you can get him on a reasonable deal, you do it now. There is no way you just easily replace Pollard with some mid round pick. He arguably outplayed Zeke last year.

Pollard is expected to take on a larger role this season in the offense. Particularly the passing game. But who knows if his role increases or if he's utilized more often intentionally. Jerry has already said Zeke needs to be the vocal point of the offense.

What do you think is best in terms of long term roster planning: giving Pollard an extension now or wait and give him a new contract in the offseason?

Spotrac has Pollard's market valued at 3 years $19 million. With an average salary of $6.3 million per year.
https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/dallas-cowboys/tony-pollard-29176/market-value/

From what I've seen these valuations tend to be off some and usually on the low end of what deals players actually end up getting. So lets says he'd sign a 3 year deal for $22 million/16 million guaranteed today.

I think it would be in the best interest of the front office to extend Pollard now. Pollard has proven that he is reliable with ball security and has big play potential. It would help solidify the RB position next year since Zeke is more than likely gone after the end of this season. With no RB emerging as a future starter in training camp, the RB position will need to be a priority in the draft next year or through free agency. With the retention of Pollard and a premium pick (round 1-3) the RB position would be set for the 2023 and 2024 seasons.

Of course the argument for waiting is that if Pollard gets paid now, he won't be as hungry as he would be in a contract year. If there were questions surrounding his work ethic or grit to play, I'd understand. But he's missed only 1 game in the 3 years since he's been here and that was after he had an injury that could have kept him out for months and his availability to play depended on pain tolerance. He was back in action after missing only one week. He has proven he has grit. A lot of it. And that is a key trait for a successful RB.

Resign Pollard today.

they will let him walk.

it’s cheaper to draft a backup for Zeke.

he did not outplay Zeke.

stats say Zeke is the RB1.

1200 APY. 12 TDS. Torn PCL.

They will let him leave. He’s UFA.

Both he and zeke are easily replaceable. Continue to build trenches and your downfield playmakers

If Dak fails this year and we get solid play from the supporting cast a difficult decision needs to be made. Heck I’d be ok with pulling him mid game this year but I’m not sure what we gave behind him

I hear Grier is gaining back up job but I also hear he ain’t exactly killing it

Only 9 RBs in the NFL average over $7M per year. I don't think he gets that if he re-signed today. Penny signed this offseason for $5.75M per. I guess you could put them in the same general category but the big difference is he is expected to be the #1 back whereas Pollard isn't. But, I guess even if it is around $5M per it's still in the ball park and doesn't change the main idea of your question. My answer above that I would have already extended him was assuming he would get much less than that. If he gets $7M per I can't re-sign him without knowing I'm definitely cutting Zeke in the next year or two max. Just too much money for the RB position to have one guy making $16M per and another $7M per IMO.

Pollard will get a significant contract.

If the Cowboys sign him now, then they might as well announce that this is Zeke's last season.

Why would they go out and sign a guy they hardly even use? And if you were Pollard, would you want to resign with a team that doesnt play you? I just dont see it happening. If I am Pollard I cant wait to get out of Dallas. I am kinda hoping that pollard gets signed by a coach that knows how to properly get the most out of his talents.

You dont draft RBs high and you dont pay them a second contract.
Not in these days of the NFL.

You should already know if you want to extend pollard by now and what you'd be willing to pay him.

TPollards agent wants max $$$.

so he will be UFA after the season.

Dallas can overpay now, or draft another RB2.

yup.

TP gonna be 26 by the next draft.

so he has to get his money on this next contract.

best guess is 4 years 16-20 million. 8 -10 mill signing bonus.

Think it is safe to say they will NOT bring both him and Zeke back. Zeke's contract actually gets cheaper after this season, especially the dead cap hit. So if they are determined to keep one........sign Pollard long-term ( 3-year deal likely) or bring Zeke back for one more season AND use a 2023 high draft pick as his potential replacement. After the issues with Zeke's contract, I don't them extending Pollard, not to mention I'm not sure they see him as a full-time back.

There is a reason why Jerry said Zeke needs to be the focal point of the offense. My guess is they wanna see what's left before next season.

Also, keep in mind, that Zeke is a complete RB. That may sound corny to some fans but IMO it's huge for Jerry and Stephen coz of Dak and their investment. Think about it, Pollard is faster, younger and can potentially be more productive, yet we haven't heard/seen anything to suggest they see him as a full-time RB. In fact, Stephen was directly asked about his future as a Cowboy and talked in circles.
