Statistics are a measurement of what has been and not what will be. If I flip a coin and it comes up heads 4 times in a row, that says nothing about the next flip. Considering teams only attempt 4th down conversions ~20% of the time the numbers suffer from a lower sample size and don't say much.

Let's say teams adopt this strategy of no kicking. Guaranteed you would see a drop in 4th down conversion rate probably along the lines of the league average for 3rd downs, ~39%.

That will never happen. Cowboys have some young bucks at the position. That said, one of them will step up. That's how they become veterans!

What if the Cowboys didn't carry a kicker?
- Either go for it on 4th or punt.
- 2 point conversions after TDs.
- Punter that can kick off.

Statistics indicate that teams would come out ahead in the long run with this approach.
- A high school coach made headlines a few years ago for always going for it on 4th down.
- Not sure if that was literally always, or if it was restricted to being on the favorable side of the 50 yard line.

A failed field goal is place at the spot of the kick.
- That's ~8 yards behind the line.

With the method I listed, they have the option to punt.
- If they are so close that punting into the endzone does not gain much, then failing by going for it does not lose much.

I think defenses and D-Coordinators would have that an offense always has 4 downs to convert.
- Envision all of the times the Cowboys made a big stop on 3rd down, then the opponent converted on 4th.
- I always want to opponent to punt in those situations.
you would be the LAC , chargers see mr brandon and it cost them a playoff berth,,beinbg wild with play calls doesn't go far ...poor Herbert has his wild west gambling coach costing him playoffs. kid of like Garett but the opposite, same results,

This is an interesting thread, for the sake of discussion.

But the real issue we have here is that this kicker situation is getting ugly.

Bring in that Youtuber guy, Deestorying.. Someone, anyone, just not these two fruitloops.

Having a kicker ain't a big deal. Just put one out there and be done with it. Games are never won or lost because of a kicker. Punters are much more important.
NEVER umm that not rue they are counted on for kickoffs, XPs, and FGs game winning or tying FGs even Greg did that,,you all wanted change but saying they dont have an important role ins a pathetic overaction.,.its called FOOTball..foot feet its punting and kicking etc,all part of the game.

If you can hit 50% you are no worse off.

Until that one game, where you're down by six and score with no seconds left on the clock.. and all you need is one point to win, and instead you have to go for two when the higher percentage call is the kick.

I hate kickers as much as xwalker probably does, and the Cowboys apparently do, but we can't fool ourselves into thinking we don't need one.

What if the kicker and the punter was one guy? What if the long snapper and the fullback was one guy. That's two extra spots we can use to win in the trenches. Either on the offensive line or on the defensive line... extras.

I wonder why coaches don't think the way I think? I'm freaking brilliant.

We will carry a kicker. It’s what’s his name I can’t pronounce..

Just call Japan's Toshiki Sato before we resort to that.

Exactly, or any of the kickers from there or other country's leagues. Surely they could be better than what we've got. Also, Stephen would love how they'd probably take league min to prove that they belong in the NFL.

Why do you think I've been plugging kickers from the Japanese X-League for years? They'd be better than what we've got ATM, and they'd be super blue light specials for Stephen.

Nice thread man. There have been some really interesting articles over the last few years supporting this theory and showing how NFL coaches are too conservative analytically. Seems to be a combination of being second guessed by the media / fans when it goes wrong and the old school approach to football. Obviously, we are seeing teams go for it on 4th down more than ever these days, which I think is really cool. Definitely takes some stones to go against the accepted grain. Anyway, really a good topic compared to the Dak sucks / Dak is awesome threads that litter this place.
