And to be fair, I was wrong on Philbin. I thought he was a decent hire but someone, maybe Dre11 or someone else, was clear he was a mistake. I even argued with him over it. I was way wrong. Philbin should have been sent to the scrap heap after 2021. This OL is in a slow transition with younger players like Smith and Biadasz and Steele being asked to make large leaps to make the OL better. IMO, there should have been a new voice in the OL room.
How much blame or credit should go to Joe Philibin ?
How much is coach ..how much is players ?
For those that support Philibin, will also credit Philbin for the development of Terrence Steele, whom the club apparently believe
was a better performer (both on/off the field) than Collins.
- But we had two Conners that were chosen high draft rounds that never developed as expected, and you have a center in Biadasz, that the McCarthy vouched
to get in the NFL draft, but thus far been average-decent.
We'll have to see how the likes of youngsters Tyler, Ball, Matt Wally, and Steele pan out.
- In fact, I can still see (and fully expect) particular teams like Tampa and Philly to shift and purposedly line up their hulking DTs in Vita Vea and Jordan Davis
over Biadasz , and with all interior guys you’d like to have guys that can singlehandedly handle their opposing foes one on one without needing double team help.
- In fairness to Philbin, only Tyler, Biadasz are under his umbrella as his draft picks – with both the Connors previous picks, and the way they have operated thus far,
they just don’t seem like stellar picks.
- I still have questions if this Packer-type zone scheme is Idea (or not ideal?) for brawl style OLinemen like Tyler Smith, Zach and Tyron- even Steele.
And I still think there’s something missing and flawed between OC and OL coach with this run scheme and design, and yes that even includes the TE.
I liked Marc Columbo’s physical approach in the power scheme. and how he got the 2019 OL to be so effective as one of the better OL units in NFL.
But McCarthy was new arrival and he has a right to have his hand pick assistant coaches, (those who management would allow) and Philibin is his long time assistant buddy.
