I'm not sure the kicker this year is currently on the team. There will be a decent kicker released before the season starts.

Kepp two kickers, Maher for the long attempts and Hajrullahu for the shorter ones.

And I'm only half joking.

Seriously, I think the Cowboys are leaning towards Hajrullahu anyways and maybe they want to see how he responds to them bringing in somebody they have a history with.

He's a career 70-something percent FG kicker who misses extra points.
I'd be nervous.
Not miserable.

70 something % nfl career is better then below 50% in training camp.

If we we're on hard knocks he would be getting cut before episode 3. Dude couldn't even finish Oxnard.

It's not like we are passing up on some Justin Tucker out there.

I really don't understand why people are so upset about bringing back Maher. It's just for camp competition. Every better option is already on somebody's roster this time of year. Now I am among those wondering why they didn't give Michael Badgley a try but then again, 31 other teams aren't either.

Believe me, the Cowboys are going to be watching other teams' preseason games these next three weeks and some kicker better than Maher is going to get cut.

I'm not arguing that.
Why you go in that direction?
I'm just saying this is no big shakes.

We need something better than Maher.
I know the talent pool is shallow, but now is the time to look into little known talents like that Japanese player that @RustyBourneHorse was pining for, for years and dude is now a Pro-Bowler.

I know the uprights are more narrow in the NFL but I really didn't expect Garibay to struggle so much. Probably mental. Anyway, I'm rooting for Hirim now.

I get the feeling we end up with 2 kickers on the roster. Harjrullahu is the consistent short yardage/XP guy. Meanwhile Maher can take the longer kicks and kickoff duties.

Not sure if the Cowboys have the roster flexibility for that, but it might make sense? Instead of one quality kicker, keep two who do a couple things well but cant do everything?
You make perfect sense, that's why it won't happen.

If you think that what they did this off-season wasn’t sitting on their hands while they have 20 million in unused cap dollars the person being ignorant is you.

Then again. You’re one of the biggest cheerleaders on this site so I’m not surprised
Really? They signed 3 players in the last 2 weeks and still have money for the swing tackle that they need and a receiver if needed.

Maybe because he made 16 of 18 last year.

Probably, but he's been kicking in the pros since 2013 and his career average is 77.4 percent. That doesn't bode well. Of course, just because we signed him doesn't mean we can't sign someone else to replace him. However, I do think it makes that less likely unless he just bombs. I preferred to wait.

Talent is not some fluid thing that flows across the roster.

We all know there are specialists. And there are times where they may beat out a more talented player, but get caught up.

We seem to have our fair share of those locked in roster spots.

I am not wasting it because our illustrious special teams coach and supposedly great personnel staff can't find a kicker.

It never was a problem until Fassel showed up.
Just saying I wouldn’t rule out the possibility. It’s the only way the Maher signing makes much sense to me. Plus this team did draft David Buehler to be a kickoff specialist. Not like this is something jerry wouldn’t entertain.

BTW Garibay was everyone's free spot on the bingo card in the 'which UDFAs make the team' pool.

My man didn't make it to the first preseason game.

Yep. I touted him before we picked him up, and he let me down.

Exactly!

Nah, some would prefer the Cowboys stick with the UDFA Garibay who has stunk it up badly so far in training camp.

I would have. He's a rookie, so give him a little more time to find himself. The preseason games don't count so it's not like we're looking for him to make a game-winning field goal to save our season.

There was still plenty of time to find another kicker without bringing back Maher, and the better options are likely on someone else's roster right now.
