He's a Cowboy now and a good pick. I'll be watching with interest how Tyler Linderbaum does with the Ravens though.

Offensive line coaches are not "overruled" on draft picks.

They can provide an opinion and it is likely considered, but there is no weight, power or decision behind it to be overruled or enforced.

The decision makers are at the top, which does not include position coaches.
It's semantics, but saying "overruled" does make it seem like more of a story than it is.

It could have just been stated that Philbin wasn't sold on Smith.

Considering Philbin has done nothing but make the OL worse since he got here, good.

To be fair though, I'm shaky on the Smith pick too. Not that he isn't a good prospect, but because I felt Linderbaum would be the immediate impact player.

Center wasn't as immediate a need as left guard with Connor Williams leaving and that is why Tyler Smith was selected over Linderbaum. I wouldn't have minded though if we selected Linderbaum because Biadasz is adequate at best and a flat out disappointment to me. Tyler Smith may also be able to play the left tackle position. He is an absolute monster with the strength of Hercules.

I don't believe this. Broadus has been trying to drum up a story line about dissension between Philbin and the scouts for a long time now. This is his latest effort. Before this, he was going on about McGovern being a guy the scouts really liked but that Philbin has no use for. Not sure why he's working this angle so hard. Maybe he has friends in the scouting department with a hate on for Philbin.

I know he was very close to former O-line coach Frank Pollack. And it seems like he’s been trying to find fault in that area ever since Pollack was let go, replaced by the disastrous Paul Alexander. But he seems to have carried his animosity over to Philbin now as well.

Maybe it's true? Maybe Philbin did want others and voiced it only to not get his way which is fine with me. Only move I couldnt stand was a future 10yr pro bowler sitting there in Humphrey and we took a crack head corner who won't be in the league in 2 years.

Then they need to do some more overruling and stop giving McGovern snaps at LG. You drafted a guy in the 1st round, he should be a day one starter, not a project.

Musical chairs doesn't typically work on an offensive line; continuity is everything.

At some point we have brought in another assistant O-Line coach. Don’t know if it was before or after the draft. Likely after. I was hoping it was philibin replacement. The guy don’t need to be here, I am telling you our O-Line aren’t blocking the same. He is MM buddy. Our ST coach kept a kicker that couldn’t kick a XP because he was a buddy. Let’s get back to power and attitude. NASTY.

No surprise to me. Not every pick will have full support from coaches to scouts to FO to owner etc...

Tyler Smith is a bit raw and it wouldn't shock me if the OL coach, who may be on the hot seat, wanted a more polished prospect. Smith has the strength and tools to be a good one but it's not like he didn't have warts that needed to be removed.

He is injured, out 1-2 weeks. Some speculate it is Lisfranc injury but the coach says it isn't.

So what's the story?

The O-line coaches had an opinion. The Head Coach and personnel executives listened. They decided to choose someone else. There's nothing unique or controversial about that. I'll bet it happens all the time.

This doesn't signal a rift between the HC and his assistants. I'll bet some assistant coaches get the player they lobby for occasionally. They can't win all the time.

If Philbin wants more say in choosing players then he should do everything possible to help the Cowboys win a championship. That will increase his opportunity to become a HC once again. Then he might have more input into which players he would like to have.

100% confident you are correct.........happens all the time between coaches and scouts but the head coach and GM make the final call unless it's a QB. Read/heard many times, that picking QBs with a usually required owner nod.

Whoever made it better be right, because Linderbaum will be an All Pro every year he plays.

Overruled makes it seem like the OL coach was given the responsibility to make the pick and then it was taken away. I think disagreed is the more appropriate word to describe the situation and haven’t we all been clamoring for Jerry to go with his scouts opinions over the position coaches?

This is a non issue.

We don’t want position coaches having final say anyway. That’s how you end up with taco charlton over TJ watt and it’s how you end up with Trysten Hill being your second round pick because the position coach went to dinner with them and there was candlelight on the table and roses and they fell in love with each other.

No thanks.

Bill Parcells wanted Marcus Spears at pick number 11 and Jerry overruled him to get DeMarcus Ware. Hoping this one turns out the same way.;)
about the only time Jerry really got one right.

You do remember Drew Henson and Johnny Football, eh?

If true then good, because I like the pick. The team needed to be more physical on the interior.
