And this is exactly the problem with the Dallas FO.

When the two guys at the top are not qualified to evaluate talent, everybody and the janitor weighs in.

Should be between the head of personnel, the HC, and the GM.

actually, all teams run like this

all AstCo get to have input its not a big deal what is a big deal is the negative constant fan responses to these threads. The important thing is the coach overruled him but all input is taken on all teams when it comes to players..they are coaching them they have experience and like any corporation they seek input and then make a final decision.

some of you need to seek help.

BTW lastly you think they dont know how to pick players our last 5 drafts or more say they do , they are at the top 5 in the league in most of the draft picks having sucess.

Offensive line coaches are not "overruled" on draft picks.

They can provide an opinion and it is likely considered, but there is no weight, power or decision behind it to be overruled or enforced.

The decision makers are at the top, which does not include position coaches.

Keep in mind that Dallas is not like other organizations, where the Cowboys' top two personnel people in terms of titles wouldn't know their rear ends from their elbows when it comes to evaluating college talent.

In 2013, the Cowboys ended their draft meetings with Sharrif Floyd as the fifth rated player, regardless of position, on their board. When their pick came up, Floyd was still available. Rod Marinelli said that Floyd didn't fit his needs as a DT in the defense that they were running. Keep in mind that he was not the DC at this time - Monte Kiffin was. The Cowboys then pivoted and traded down with the 49ers, and got Travis Frederick. Without the position coach speaking up, there's a fair chance that Floyd would have ended up as a Cowboy.

In 2019, the Cowboys went with Trysten Hill in the second round, again largely on the recommendation of Marinelli. There's greater debate for what happened in 2017, where the Cowboys went with Taco Charlton over T.J. Watt, as to whether Marinelli or Jason Garrett drove those decisions, but that's not germane to this discussion.

The bottom line is, position coaches have had far too much influence over draft decision making in Dallas. To me, it's largely due to the fact that the top two guys in this pyramid are bereft of knowledge or philosophy on how to draft and build a roster.

Isn't this normal? Wouldn't the HC or OC have more of a say of a first round pick than a position coach
Yeah it's normal as far as I know. I personally like hearing these reports because it makes me feel that we have a normal organization.

Yup. Well done.

Especially calling Jerry and his horde germs, couldn't agree more.

seems McCarthy did BPA and did away with some of the favoritism showed by the coaches

I'm not surprised at Philbin being over-ruled,,, I am surprised that he's still the OL coach though,, what the hell? His impact on this offense is negligible at best and more likely negative as far as I can tell. The only caveat is that, supposedly, Jerry told them all "hands-off" on the young boy wonder offensive coordinator,,, so maybe those uninspiring blocking schemes are his.

Of course they weren't! They knew the other guys were better and that Smith is a flag waiting to happen.
