As time passes, Cowboys contract with Ezekiel Elliott looks even worse

honestly I think its more of a testiment to the line. any number of backs could have come in and acheived Zekes numbers. That said Zeke was a beast in his first 3 years.

That's the Zeke who was being talked about in reference to missing games though. That's the Zeke that was like, "OK, I'll never be more valuable than right now working for this guy," and watched Jerry fold.

Article is a combination of crying over spilled milk and goofy timing after a Sturm and later ESPN point.
Zeke's in the last year of any guarantees.
Zeke has the 4th most rushing yards in the league since 2019 and is an elite pass protector. So he's been a top 5 RB in that time but most definitely not at the very top or worth his AAV.
After this season he will either get renegotiated down in cost or he will be released.
And then the totals will change.
POTENTIAL OUT: 2023, 4 YR, $50,124,551; $11,860,000 DEAD CAP
So he is NOT getting 16 AAV. But 12.5 AAV is a lot at RB.

McCaffrey is 19th in
rushing yards since 2019.
His contract is much worser than Zekes.
POTENTIAL OUT: 2023, 3 YR, $39,174,774; $18,352,250 DEAD CAP
More dead cap hit, higher AAV and far less production.

LOL............."elite pass protector" I always get a kick out of that brag. Do you ever hear ANYONE talk about Taylors blocking skills? Derrick Henry? BO Jackson, ect.....ect......?

It says it all. Best way to beat the blitz in the NFL is have your back fake a block and flare out into the flat quick and burn them for 60 yards. Problem is Zeke cant do that.

Let Pollard sneak out on the blitz once or twice and see what teams do.

This has been one of my major gripes. You nailed it. A number of backs in this offense, with this line could have put up great numbers.

The contract is bad for the team. There is no spinning that reality.

The fact the Joneses had Zeke under contract for two more years left on his rookie deal when they ponied up this horrible deal makes it even dumber.

A smart owner/ GM would have told him to sit his prime years in Cabo jogging the beach. He would have been back before the 1st game.

The Joneses look like huge fools here.

I don't get the 3 year average purpose. Cap numbers are inflated and deflated to make certain years work/shove money to future years to deal with.

Contracts are restructured or cut all the time. I doubt CMC is even on the roster for 3 years the way he piles up injuries.

Zeke may have a 22-24 average of 16mil per year, but that doesn't mean his average cap hit will actually be that over those 3 years.
Zeke got the highest amount of guaranteed but he also got the longest contract, intentionally as the Jones gang loves to restructure their core players

The only red flag to me was the % of guaranteed vs total contract.
Both Kamara and CMC got under 50% at signing.
Kamara is suspended to start the season and CMC missed almost all of last year... I'd say out of the three we've gotten the most production and return on investment even though the contract is not in our favor.

I guess there’s that.

With all due respect this was just posted yesterday in bloggintheboys responding to the ESPN clip. And wasn’t bashing Zeke. It was bashing his contract which I’d interpret as bashing our ownership.
Funny how this works, RB, DL, WR the list goes on, it’s not bashing the player it’s the contract, what happened to the it’s the market, it’s the way it works next guy up gets more to reset the market so don’t worry about the money, the caps going up, why what’s ok for Dak isn’t ok for all the players. Talk about hypocrisy from you. They get paid they under perform they are in the best shape of their life, they disappear in the big games it’s the Dallas way, Jerry feels this is a team build to win a championship LMAO. Thanks for the laughs king troll.

Not Zeke imo, it’s the ol that is the weakness. Keep getting hit at the los and your running game ain’t going to look so good. May-not be any better this year either.
Some refuse to see that. It's Zeke money that's the problem on this board......want a RB getting his own yardage at that pay. OL is not up to the acclaimed status earned over the years. Injuries to the OL have taken a toll, depth for good blocking has suffered, and reputation has blinded some to only sling rocks at Zeke.

This board would blame Zeke if Chaz Green was the lead blocker.

If you believe or have bought into the hype from Jethro that this is a team built to win a championship the joke is on you.

And having to pay your franchise QB market value is a different issue. I’ve also said Jethro mismanaged it as well.

We’ll start by getting this out of the way. Ezekiel Elliott is a very talented football player. He brings value to any team he is on. He is a durable running back, he is a fierce blocker in pass protection, and he can be a very productive player. The Cowboys are a better team with him on the roster, although the ability to replace him probably isn’t as hard as the Cowboys staff thinks it would be.

All of this is a long way of saying Elliott is a quality back who can help his team, but he shouldn’t be the highest paid running back in the game. Way back in 2019, the Cowboys made a mistake by handing Elliott a huge contract after he held out of training camp. That mistake haunts them to this day.

Just how miscalculated that contract was can be shown in a recent article from ESPN discussing the highest-paid players in the league at each position. They break their figures down by the highest three-year average, and highest guaranteed money. Elliott is second in average per year, and is first in guaranteed money.

Highest three-year APY:

1. Christian McCaffrey, $17.2 million

Signed: April 2020 (contract ends in 2025)

2. Ezekiel Elliott (DAL), $16 million

3. Alvin Kamara (NO), $12.7 million

Total guaranteed money:

1. Ezekiel Elliott, $50.05 million

Signed: September 2019 (contract ends in 2026)

2. Christian McCaffrey (CAR), $36.3 million

3. Alvin Kamara (NO), $34.3 million

any large second contract to any RB is bad. I don't care how good they are. history shows none are worth the money. RBs can easily be found in any round and can be RB by committe as proven by many teams.

worse yet, it was handed out with 2 years left on the contract....

Second contracts like this certainly aren’t healthy. And you make the point that this writer was making that we could have found another RB in draft.

Jethro was Bambozzled once again. He simply doesn’t manage some of the marquee players contracts very well mismanaging several in recent years.

its his lack of football knowledge and how to put a team together. once again, he thought, hey, 2016 we went 1-1 in playoffs and we are ready to make a run in 2017, and he paid Zeke, thinking superbowl here I come.

Jethro is an idiot.

I’m not sure if it’s totally idiocy or his priorities are not what they should be.

He actually didn’t pay him until 2019.

Fans forget Murray led the league with basically same OL in 2014 as Zeke had in 2016.

Dallas made the tough cap decision with Murray but didn’t with Zeke. If we’d of waited until Zekes rookie contract had matured we’d of been in better shape to negotiate.

But in 2019 with him threatening not to play our ownership buckled under pressure . And we didn’t have a playoff season anyway. 2020 Dak was hurt. Another wasted season and then Zeke hurt in 2021. 3 seasons without enough production to warrant contract.

We should have rolled the dice in 2019 and called his bluff . But there was something else at play and where our dysfunctional ownership continues hurting us. Jethro was worried with Daks contract coming up in 2020 that without Zeke , Dak and our offense wouldn’t be as effective and public perception might not have been as supportive to pay Dak.

One more example of the jones boys incompetence. We could have gotten Zeke for less with a REAL GM and competent people around him.
Will McClay is allowed to do only so much.
Frankly I think he is the only intelligence in the entire front office.
