Tyler Smith was dominating

No one denies that Smith can get the job done.

BUT he MUST cut down the penalties. You can squawk about questionable penalties (I CERTAINLY DO) but it does not matter what we think:

IT ONLY MATTERS WHAT THE REFS DO.

Our rushing attack is going to be very much improved this year. Bodes well for the play action passing. Like Eatman said they need to quick jerking Tyler around and give him some reps at LG. You know, the position he hasn't played since HS.

At least he wasn't getting pushed back like CW did, from what I can tell (I couldn't see the game last night). That's a plus. Sounds like he was the one doing the dominating for a change.

Context people......

How are those holds? Looks to me like he's trying to position himself in the first one and ends up dominating the player. The second one is ridiculous. He's pushing the player back who falls on his own. So, essentially the player got the benefit of a dive because Smith owned him. I don't think either of those should have been holding.

i thought he looked good.
some of those calls were bogus.
but i think he's gonna be an excellent pro.

Not to mention, from what I saw in a Twitter clip, that the second one consisted of a Broncos player diving and getting the call. That was a horrid call.

Agree 1000% but I'm not sure it is fair to compare tonight with what happened last year entirely. What happened last year was with the starter, not so much tonight. IF this is still an issue after game one.......I'm concern

Shouldn’t matter if it was starters or backups. If the entire offseaskn’s emphasis was cut out the penalties and in your first game you have 20 or so called penalties, that’s just really disappointing.

And a lot of them were due to laziness and stupidity, which is the biggest concern. It’s one thing to have a questionable roughing the QB. It’s another when you a crap ton of dumb stuff like offsides on a FG, false starts, illegal formations, etc.

The first one I can see why he was called. The defender tried to swim his arm up and Smith had his hand almost around the arm. And right before the move, when he tries to pull away it appears Smith has a grasp of his jersey.

Ball, who really struggled, also got a ticky tack hold late too.

He absolutely has to win that LG job. We cannot expect to have a quality OL if McGovern is the starter.

the coaches need to make sure Tyler knows what is actually a penalty in the NFL,seems like he did the same thing in TC.

What would you do to fix the problem that you are convinced MM and coaches haven't done?

The coaches said they would fix it in the off-season. Through one game whatever they did, focused on, tried to drill into their heads didn’t work.

Are you really gonna just throw your hands up and pretend this isn’t an issue that needs fixing?

If penalties are a problem again this year, that’s a coaching issue.

That's not a good thing for a first round pick.
Typically I'd agree, but his upside is Larry Allen, and worth the risk. He has a pretty good shot at hitting his upside, and I dont see him as being boom or bust as much as some do.

Really, the talent is clear and obvious....just certain things need to be honed.....and therin may lie the problem...I dont know that Philbin is the guy to do that, and Tyler is probably going to end up with two position coaches in his first two years, which may stunt progress.

Year three is probably when they ask him to move to LT, so stability overall may be a concern, but if you listen to him talk, one becomes convinced he is up to any challenge.

I think he will be fine, but needs to clean up the penalties of course, and appears to be far from alone in that department.

Where's the penalty?

Dude beat him to the spot and he stopped him by reaching out with his left arm. Going to be a long season if we're doing these kind of apologetics after each game.

It's a coaching problem only if you're not coaching knuckleheads.
