Coming into the preseason opener, quarterback Cooper Rush was presented with the opportunity to earn some leeway in the race for backup quarterback. With Will Grier out, Rush started the game and spent all of the first half leading the way for the Cowboys offense.

The mile-high air didn’t treat Rush well, unable to muster 100 passing yards and turning the ball over on a fourth-down attempt. On an out route from rookie wide receiver Jalen Tolbert, the ball was late and inside for the Broncos defense to steal. Grier’s stock likely rises with the struggles for his competition.

Beyond Rush’s struggles, the penalties were the story for the better half of the game for Dallas. In 2021, Mike McCarthy’s team struggled with penalties and the first outing of 2022 was no different. In the first half, the Cowboys committed a whopping ten penalties and came out of the locker room after halftime with another pair of infractions from the offense ending up with 17 team penalties.

The abundance of the players on the field are reserves but the lack of discipline with penalties are a concern . Full story and tweets below .

The Dallas Cowboys generally don’t play well in the preseason. Let’s start with that. They are 12-25 in the preseason since 2012. And their last true road victory in the preseason came in 2012 against the Raiders.

Most disappointing was that a Cowboys team that led the league in penalties last season and made a point to emphasize discipline in the off season committed 9 penalties for 65 yards in the first half. Key flags sparked all three scoring drives. They finished the game with 17 penalties for 129 yards.

Can't win if you have that many penalties
After a season where Cowboys led the league in penalties and it was the major focus hailed by MM in offseason with more discipline , the penalties continue to soar albeit mostly by the backups. But we had a few by our top drafted rookies who are certain to be starters.

Tyler Smith will end up being CW 2.0. You're going to be hearing "holding #73" many times this season.

But we really can't talk about the penalties because it's only a preseason game and all the second team was out there so if you say anything about the penalties people will just freak out and make excuses.

Sorry Cowboys faithful that's a pile of crap first team second team third team penalties were supposed to be made a priority this offseason and obviously it wasn't attended to in the slightest.

Just an example arguably one of the most famous plays in Cowboys history the Hail Mary our center got hurt I believe the play before and was replaced on that play.

With today's Cowboys that's a pre-snap penalty waiting to happen or a fumble.

Tom Landry had his Cowboys prepared and ready to play at all times no matter what string they played
Why can't it happen now

Normally I’d agree except for our top 2 draft picks each had a couple penalties each on them who are certain to be starters.

And the 17 team penalties becomes a story line only because of MM announced focus of discipline after Cowboys led the league in penalties last year.

“Beyond Rush’s struggles, the penalties were the story”

this summed up the game for me. I think,if not for the penalties and how badly Rush was outplayed by their QBs we would be sitting here this morning thinking the game was about even.

We seem to have a culture of holding penalties that is ingrained
That's a real concern

Possibly, but one thing for sure is that CW never dominated blocking like Tyler Smith just did. His run blocking in particular was off the charts.

Yeah, I had hoped McCarthy would give us something better than Garrett, but so far, I don't see it. Maybe this season, it will finally click for him. I don't know. o_O

Greg I'm 100% with you that first paragraph was just a bit of sarcasm because I knew if I beat the penalty drum that the usual suspects would jump in and say it was only preseason
.
That's said for heaven's sake at the end of the season when the coach says he's going to make penalties a priority could we at least look like he made it an afterthought. Sheesh we got more penalties now than we ever had surely doesn't show that we were getting the team to concentrate on discipline.

But Jerry will never learn until you get the proper people to teach the talent will just rot on the vine and never really attain what it's capable of.

This may or may not be a harbinger of things to come for the regular season. I will begin to care when the games actually count.

Agreed I guess it would be wishful thinking to expect that we would have made any progress in this area but I was hopeful.

Maybe things will be better when the season actually starts
