Notice of the top 10 teams, 5-6 were playoff teams. Also note, that prior to the playoff game, it appears we had them under control from the Raiders game. As stated in another thread, some of what we are seeing is a sensitive carryover from the 49ers playoff game but as you can see penalties were not an every week issue in 2021.
Just they pick the wrong game to have their worst day for penalties.....lol

They led the league in penalties. In their biggest game of the year they were undisciplined.

The lengths you guys go to to try to spin things is impressive. Let’s look at your data though. After Oakland, they played one quality team - Arizona - until the playoffs. They had 10 penalties.

In fact, in every big game they were largely undisciplined and racked up a lot of penalties.

Penalties were a BIG issue last year. This team won’t have the luxury of being that ****** with penalties two years in a row.

If you perform how you practice— and preseason games are glorified practices— we HAVE to be concerned.

MM supposedly devoted the entire offseason to “fixing” the penalty problem. To go put the product on the field yesterday is inexcusable.

Penalties are a direct reflection of culture, discipline, accountability, and professionalism. We appear to be lacking in every department. He is going to excuse and deflect and act like somehow it’s not a big deal bc “it’s just a preseason game”— but this is a 3 alarm fire and the HC either doesn’t think it’s a problem or is over his head in terms of being able to provide a solution.

I'm still waiting for how YOU would address/fix the problem that coaches have overlooked.

Yeah that one stings in several different ways.

I never quite got how exactly you work on not being penalized, but Mike talked a big game. When nothing changes, and there are also no consequences, what happens next?

What the stats don’t show is WHEN the penalty flags were thrown…….that’s what really matters

Phantom flags thrown that reverse a 3rd down conversion or negating a qb sack is what the Zebras do best to us.

The other 5-6 playoffs teams actually WON a game in the playoffs. Except the Raiders which they did play well vs. Cincy

I swear I wasn’t trying to draw you in with that one……too early on a Sunday morning to think up something like that.

however, I do understand that you believe that our gripes about the officiating is based on our bias toward our beloved team, but I can sincerely say that I believe that the officiating bias is in favoring a handful of teams.

I have witnessed teams like the Packers, Steelers and Patriots almost never get a flag thrown on them on any final game winning drive. The Raiders will continue to get hosed just like the the majority of other teams.

I don’t believe there is a deep seeded conspiracy against the other teams more than there is a preconception the the Steelers, Patriots and Packers have a history of more disciplined players and it affected the refs judgement

again, I understand your position and respect it but the, number of penalties stat, only tells a part of the story.

+1 ......our margin is much thinner. We are not good enough to overcome them.

They did get rid of Collins, Williams and the knucklehead Gregory.

2 of those were top 10 in penalties and the other just waited for the worst time to commit one

after leading the league last year... 17 flags last night. Next highest number of flags so far in preseason is 12. I didn't do the math, but the average is probably 6-7 per team. This isn't a conspiracy by the refs - it's poor leadership.

Or perhaps perennial winners are just more disciplined and fans need to make up narratives to compensate for why their team isn't as good. Not hard to "see things" when those are the mental optics. People's brains actually mandate that they see something to make it right within.

It’s not my job to make this team more disciplined. All I know is the team was terrible with penalties last year (and probably cost them a game, maybe two) and after an offseason of everyone from Jerry on down claiming the penalties have to stop, the team’s first action results in 17 accepted penalties, 5 more than the next most penalized team in the first week.

But again, your continued deflection from what was a massive problem last year that showed up again last night is impressive.

I'm not a fan of blaming the head coach when there's so much out of his control in Dallas,,, but I have to say MM hasn't shown me anything positive since he arrived. Lot's of feel good platitudes and unmeasurable "improvements",,, along with a fair number of head scratchers.

Was this one of the flags on Smith (#73)? If so, that was ticky tac. That said, he’s got to get his hands inside and stop yanking.

Still haven't been able to see the game (they are replaying it soon)......but I flipped through the boxscore because I wanted to know exactly who was committing these penalties.

The bad news is in addition to the ridiculous enough 17 figure, another four were declined. Yikes.

I guess it could be spun that only two (both Tyler) were committed by projected starters.

Then again, guys like Basham, SWill, Fowler and Joseph are expected to be regular rotational guys, and it's not as if say, 8-9 were committed by camp body types.

Did you hear the audio of the Tulsa coach saying he would just maul people and the refs would just figure he must have done something wrong?

You'd figure this to be less of a problem in the NFL, and its only one game, and his very first.

His upside is pretty amazing to think about.

LOL.....figures

What am I deflecting? I'm not overreacting to the first preseason game where only one or two starters played. Simply saying we can't know how well the problems have been addressed until games are real. Using the first preseason where at least the majority will never play a snap and the rest won't make the team the standard of what to expect in game 1 or the season is silly.

As stated in another thread, last night was ugly, no question about that, but in context, let's wait until we see the starters in real games.
