The problem with "next man up" is that has that ever been a positive with the Cowboys when a starter goes down?

Too often it's next man up, team go down.

There are a few exceptions like Schultz but not enough.

I took it more as there are opportunities to contribute right away, not necessarily coming in to play because of injury.

But agree, the depth never seemed to be there replacing injured players.

Mickey calls the "draft and develop" philosophy McCarthy's, but it was in place before McCarthy arrived. The Joneses have been stuck on it for years.

Most of that issue centered around oline injuries over the years. When you have 3 1st invested in the line along with 4 big contracts it doesn’t leave you with a lot it draft or cap capital to invest in backups when you have a 53 man roster to fill out. Lawrence and Gregory both missed time last season consecutively at one point, hell even Armstrong was out for a bit and the end position kept humming for the most part with nobodies and other teams cast offs. Issue to me would be why is this team so bad at picking back end of the draft Oline!

I guess that's why they picked up 3 D FA players, including Preston and Za'Darius Smith, that helped them get over the hump.

The Cowboys actually use that "we don't play big in FA'" like some kind of bragging right.

Same way I took it. More of a not a big drop off from one guy to the next. Because the next man is already ready.

Sounds like we will be able to rotate guys in and out to keep them fresh.

Mickey is s company man who knows who writes his checks. "Next man up" and "we like our guys" are phrases that have been overused since the Garrett era.

Wel, I'm sure that McCarthy has talked about "draft and develop," but it's the Joneses' strategy, not his. In fact, his first year here, he tried to use their cheap FA philosophy on proven older vets like McCoy, Poe and Clinton-Dix, and it backfired. For the Joneses, that probably just felt like vindication to them for not spending big money on name FAs, but what it really showed is that if you buy cheap name vet FAs, you get broken-down name vet FAs.

That probably should give us pause on Peters, but we're more in a forced-hand situation. There's not much out there right now, so we might as well take a chance that he can squeeze out one more decent season, especially since our preference is that our first-round pick prove capable of handling to starting role. Cheap name vet insurance is a whole lot different than cheap name vet starters.

What hump did those 3 D players get them over ?

Speaking of “ next man up “ if Anthony Brown who for a 6th rounder has carved out a nice career in Dallas gets dinged I assume DaRon Bland is “ next man up “ ? And what does that say about the “ draft and develop “ philosophy of the # 2 and # 3 picks from last season ?

It is hilarious how rarely the "next man up" actually happens for the Cowboys. We have been devoid of depth for decades. Not saying it hasn't happened, it is uncommon and short-lived.
