Why is Jimmy Johnson not in the Cowboys Ring of Honor?

It is because Jerry Jones is a narcissist.

The following is a true story.

One day Jerry Jones decided he would put Tony Dorsett and Randy White in the Ring of Honor. Three months later, both Cowboys fans everywhere and the rest of the world who cared witnessed the event happen.

Fast forward to August 5, 2021.

The same man was put on the spot for when he would induct Jimmy Johnson into the Ring. I will make it possible for any member to re-hear what he actually said (turn on the one minute clip's audio if necessary)

Here is what Jones said for members who prefer the transcript (in bold):

Jerry: "Well I think that's fair to say uh shall we do it right here or..."
[Comment: How often has Jones hesitated to respond into an open mike? The answer is that it is extremely rare. Why did Jones stumble here? He did not want to talk about the subject.]

Jerry: "I think we've got some great days ahead of us so we are going to certainly be recognizing what's happening here with the hall of fame uh but"
[Comment: The question was WHEN. He deflects with some generalization about "US" even though the question is not about HIM. He sets up another deflection the "BUT"]

Jerry: "uh Tex Schram who started that Ring of Honor said "Jerry keep it keep it kind of limited with people but make sure it wasn't just about the plays they made make sure they contributed to the story of the franchise."
[Comment: He emphasizes the reasoning for not putting Johnson into the Ring yet was due to advice he received and not because HE refuses to do so.]

Jerry:" Now it's kind of hard to not recognize this contribution to the story of the franchise."
[Comment: He attempts to avert possible questions for his reasoning by switching the spotlight from HIMSELF to Johnson.]

Jerry: "Well we can be if we can I don't know how we're going to upstage."
[Comment: His mind is scrambling to come up with a noncommittal answer by pointing out the current event was the Hall of Fame Game that had nothing to do with the franchise's Ring of Honor. He wanted everyone to consider his response would not be proper etiquette during the current event.]

Jerry: "But we'll be in the ring of honor."
[Comment: This is actually the most significant thing that comes out of his mouth. The original question was about Johnson. He twisted the talking point to THEM. The deflection contains an element of truth. It is extremely likely BOTH men will eventually be inducted into the Ring but there is no rule stating HE must induct either Johnson or himself.]

I believe Johnson, who has known the man since their college freshman year, a nearly 60 freaking year relationship, understood this final deflection with the question, "While I'm alive?"

Sure. That can be taken as a joke. Everyone laughs but it is a valid question based upon what JONES DID NOT SAY. Everyone should take a moment and realize Jones NEVER committed to anything.

Jones could have said Johnson would be inducted in the first, second, third or even fourth quarter of the season. Jones had the option of saying the event would be announced during the season in advance of the 2022 season and claimed he needed as much time as possible to plan a ceremony worthy of Johnson. Maybe one rivaling the Hall of Fame ceremony Johnson was there for.

Nope. He did not commit to anything then. He has not committed to anything since then.

Some people automatically associate this level of flat out lying and neverending purposeful indecision to egomania. Pettiness. Spite. Selfishness. Certainly, all those excuses are part of the real reason but they do not validate Jones' entire behavior.

Narcissism does though.

It means nothing now. It is not what it started out to be, now it's let's put everybody in.

Jerry, at least the reason he gave, is that there are players he is prioritizing getting in from former generations before putting Johnson, Romo, and Jason (I'm guessing Ware as well) in.

Jerry screwed the fans all for his own sake. Jimmy didn’t quit anything. He was pushed out the door. They were 2 time Super Bowl champs and Jerry chose that moment to try to change his contract. “Be part of the fun”. And here we are 28 years of incompetence later and some still blame the coach! lol

It was a two way street and Jimmy did admit that he was at fault too. They obviousl both had huge egos. It's a shame they both didn't work it out together and continued to win champions. Man, this team could have won 4 or 5 of them. .

Is Jerry Jones still holding a grudge? He's even been quoted that he *** up. They seem to get along now. Jimmy is even in the Hall of Fame but he's not in the Cowboys Ring of Honor?

Without Jimmy Johnson, the Cowboys win no Super Bowls in the 90s.

Is this a trick question?

One guy was under contract and the other wanted to change the parameters. How is that a 2 way street? Jimmy might’ve said some regrettable things after the fact but the entire situation leading up to the divorce was instigated by Jerry when it didn’t have to be. They could’ve won a lot, but the owner put a stop to it.

For one thing, Jerry and Stephen are too busy GM'ing the Cowboys
to on the field successes to make time for such remembrances of days gone by.

Jerry desperately has been hoping for some playoff success of any kind before putting Jimmy into the RoH so that he could at least attempt to argue against the notion that the 90s were all Jimmy so Jerry keeps delaying and delaying thinking that "this will be the year" and it never is.

if that’s the case Jimmy will never get in.

This isn't even a question. Jerry Jones. Final answer. He hates Jimmy, especially since he knows he was the true mastermind behind the Super Bowl teams. And Jerry's ego is huge. Even after all this time, he won't acknowledge what Jimmy did for this franchise in the 90s.

Why is this thread still up? I was told that I was beating a dead horse when I asked the same thing and the thread was deleted.

The problem for Jerry is he just doesn't want to re-live Jimmy and those years for an entire week and field all the media questions about those years reminding him of how little he had to do with it all. He doesn't want attention called to it. He just went through it at the HOF induction for Jimmy and he looked miserable. Nor does he want to welcome and greet Johnson as a visiting dignitary while the eyes and ears of cowboy nation and the national media scrutinize every word and gesture . It would be an extremely awkward and miserable week for him and the fans can't force him to do it. His plan is probably to let SJ induct him posthumously.
