In fact, Sturm's career may have changed a bit.

Mike Rhyner and a bunch of ticket people started a new sports talk station today.

Picking on Bob Sturm here, but the list is endless.

The nerdy statistical and analytical arguments they bring - and with such intensity and condescension - would be insulting if it wasn't so tragically and comically pathetic. Doesn't matter how many times they're wrong, the next go-round, they're equally as certain and arrogant about their opinions they gift to us as charity from heaven itself.

Sturm rambled to no end about what a ridiculously stupid pick Tyler Smith was. Just drafted way too high, and a horribly flawed prospect in the early rounds to be even considered anywhere near a first-round pick. So many of his know-it-all ilk pounded the pulpits with the same drivel before a single ball was snapped.

Fast forward about 30 days, and now Tyler Smith looks like the best pick in the 2022 draft. Dude has played at an elite level from his first snap as a rookie against good pass rushers. Absolutely dominating people at times, and surprising Jason Peters with his knowledge, even correcting him at times.

Terrance Steele was going to be a disaster in August. Remember? Losing Gregory was really going to hurt, as was Cooper and Wilson.

Rewind to the 2021 draft when, according to Sturm's calculations, Micah Parsons was an unfortunate second prize, he told us, for a Cowboys team needing a OT or CB much worse. That doozy looks like "Dewey Defeats Truman" times a million now, eh?

This is the same Sturm who lambasts the Dak doubters as backwoods football imbeciles, as he giggly recites his bible of statistics ad nauseum. Meanwhile, again and again when the games really matter, Dak breaks windows and sets off fire alarms as he clangs passes off everything but receivers hands downfield. Yeah, he's not quite as vocal about Dak these days if you haven't noticed.

Again, he's far from alone, and I'm picking on Sturm because of his locale.

The mighty football expert world is dripping with these contrarians with slide rules, trying to reduce the most complicated team sport on the planet into pocket-protector analytics, as if fantasy football really is football. It is to them.

Go back and watch draft shows from 5 years ago and bring some popcorn and a mood to laugh. It's high comedy, especially with the vitriol and absolute certainty brought into these conversations over guys that prove to be everything but what was said, better and worse.

Mike Mayock actually parlayed his "expertivity" into a gig with Mark Davis' Raiders, and lo and behold, he's proving what a know-nothing talent evaluator he was all along. Almost all of their top picks since he's been there are either gone or are on their way out the door.

Of course, I'm just having some fun here, and I don't know who's going to hit or not either. It's time everyone stopped quoting and paying attention to these "O-fers", and just let time and observation be the judge.

Will McClay has the track record none of these professional guessers do. Trust those very few elite talent evaluators like him, even if Bob Sturm tells you otherwise.

And if you don't believe me, just ask Travis Frederick.

Well that is all fine and good, but advanced analytics are a useful tool. To decry them as "pocket protector analytics" is a dreadful over simplification of reality. A more nuanced approach utilizing analytics as well as the tried and true "eye test" of a skilled scouting department is likely to be the combination most successful front offices use.

Pro sports prospect grading is one of the most inexactly sciences on the planet. Many brilliant football minds have tried and failed to develop a generalizable model to project player success. The same thing goes for the statisticians. The truth is that utilizing as many tools as possible to find the best talent is realistically the best way to go since none of them are proven to be extremely effective on their own.

Certain positions get over drafted. QB and OL to name a couple. I do seem to remember Tyler was a concensus late first round pick, with some having him mid first. The only real knocks on him were penalties and level of competition. The bottom line though is when in doubt, what does his tape and your eyes tell you?
,

Some had him as a second rounder because he came from an unknown school and was very raw in his technique. I had thought that we had reached and could have gotten him in the 2nd round. What's worst was that he had a propensity for penalties.

We have gotten fortunate the several years that “our guy” disappears a pick or three before we are up and we have to just that the BPA on our board. We got Fredbeard, Martin, and Parsons that way.

agreed except for fredbeard. the opposite actually, our guy was there and they traded down and “reached” for fred

not to mention I respect anyone who goes on record with all of their takes year in and year out. It’s easy to bash folks we have all the receipts for. Sturm is pretty awesome in my book

SMH.....Bob Sturm wasn't the only guy who said the pick was dumb. This whole site did as well. Bob is still the best read in town and there's no one near.

Ok Mrs. Sturm.

I do agree there are lots of Cowboys media pundits who look really stupid after Parsons and Smith have turned out to be incredible. I disagree that their opinions have anything to do with analytics… just inexperience and untrained eyes. They create a media echo chamber where somebody like Dane Brugler gets his opinions amplified by all the armchair evaluators.

This reads like one big strawman propped up in an attempt to make a point.

Feel free to post actual quotes/links of Sturm saying “what a ridiculously stupid pick Tyler Smith was.”

Something that has jumped with Tyler that sometimes gets missed in evaluations in the media and amongst fans is football character and being a self starter.

He hired renowned OL guru Duke Manyweather for training and development. That is a big reason why he has been able to come in an play LT when the Cowboys had working him at LG exclusively. And as far as OG goes, he attached himself to Zach Martins hip during OTA and camp.

Cowboys drafted a pro's pro. Thats not something most media scouts and fans will really see
