The Saints are paying Andy Dalton 3M for 2022.

Rush is unlikely to exceed that amount for 2023.

I'd be surprised if it's even that much. We've won four games with Rush with the defense playing outstanding. Rush has proven capable in those four games, but no one is going to mistake him at this point for a starting QB or even a backup who can get the job done if you don't have a top-10 defense. There's a lot more that he'd need to show, including the ability to win a shootout, IMO, before his demand goes up. Now, teams that do not have a serviceable backup QB might go after him in the offseason, but I'd be surprised if it's more than that ... unless something changes over the next few weeks.

If we lose against the Rams and he plays poorly, it will just verify that he's just an OK backup. The type you look to improve on if you can.

The hype for Rush is a bit overblown.

  • Think about starting QBs that most of CZ would rate as not very good.
    • Carson Wentz
    • Daniel Jones
  • Any team would take these 2 over Rush if the cost was the same.

That's definitely a ceiling thing. No one sees Rush as a guy who can be a successful starter in this league. Wentz keeps getting chances because he is physically gifted. Jones would, too, for the same reason. Rush is not, so he has to prove that his mental gifts far surpass his physical limitations. That's hard to sell because the only way to see those mental gifts is by him getting out there and doing what he's been doing. But even with that, GMs are going to look at the physical limitations that could have resulted in two interceptions last week. The defense committed penalties, but they are not evaluating the defense, they are looking at what the QB is doing.

Obviously, you can improve your physical gifts some, but the reason mental midgets keep getting shots is because GMs and coaches know that if you can improve their mental shortcomings, you can have something special. (That rarely seems to work, though, but there's always great temptation to give guys with great physical gifts a try.)

I don't thinking Dak coming back after surgery is a solution. He will have to work on his grip and that's not going to get fixed in a couple weeks.

When healthy Dak gives us the best chance at winning...KM keeps this same scheme and no air raid crap with this roster we have a shot. Rush can not make the throws needed to beat good teams, thats not a knock on Rush its a normal problem teams have when the backup is in. But yeah he needs to be healthy.

Rush might end up in Washington

And to think, Washington could have had saved a lot of money and draft capital if they just would have paid to keep the QB they drafted in Kirk Cousins. Not a world beater but significantly better than anything they have had.

Honestly at this point I think it might be too late. But is there any reasonable amount of money we could offer him to keep him around after this season?

Honestly his agent is probably seeing $$$ so I think he’s probably goin into free agency at the end of the year no matter what.

But I really hope we can give this guy a multi year deal for a reasonable amount.

yeah, his agent will be doing the smart thing and have Rush go up for auction. Starter money will be a pretty, pretty good raise. Too rich for Jones to pay a backup here.

Who knows? It's going to depend on how he plays the Rams and Eagles.

I already know he's a starter-quality quarterback.

The things he lacks, he can easily work on. The speed, strength, arm strength. He's been in the league six years, so you'd think he would have worked on those things. But Cooper Rush has worked on the mental aspect of the game, apparently. And that's the hardest part to obtain. If we do sign him, we're going to have to pay him at least $4-5 million. Maybe a tad more if he wins some more games.

The thing is, it's worth it to fall back on him when the Dak contract comes up. So, I'm going to say "yes." If Jerry cares about winning, we keep Cooper Rush.

I would have said he's the absolute worst player of the game before week 1. Now he's the friggin' MVP. And he could be a top QB in the league, imo.

Rush is NOT going to be a hot commodity in free agency, contrary to what some delusional fans think. He’s done better than we ever imagined. Most fans were mad when he was signed to the practice squad, thinking we could do better. No team is going to offer him a starting gig….period. There may be teams that would like to have him as a backup, but he’s not looking at a huge contract that Jerry can’t fit under our cap.

The big question will be do you want to sign him to a contract that makes him your backup for 3-4 years, or do you continue looking for more talented QBs (arm and mobility) to develop. If the front office still thinks Dak is the long term answer, you sign Rush. If you are concerned that Dak may need to be replaced in 2-3 years or whatever is possible, then you draft a QB with a high ceiling and start developing him. You are never going to plan on Cooper as your franchise QB.

You're wrong, though. Teams need QBs. And Rush is at least a viable QB.

Sure, he's leaning on the defense. But we are sticking to our game plan, and banging it out by using our defense as sort of part of our offense. Like, when we accepted yards instead of taking a 3rd and 11 and that resulted in a FG.

Rush might be able to do more. But now, all he has to do is make the right plays and do just enough to win.

I see a Kurt Warner type. With another year, it's possible he gets better even if people are saying he's hit his ceiling. I would say I don't know. He could improve. I want to see one more game with Gallup in there with a little more time to heal.

2 stats about cooper rush...

Already won two games with less than 100 rushing yards dak didn’t do that one time last year.

Rush is top 4 in qb rating with josh Allan mahomes and tua.

That's because Rush doesn't try to force things. He stays in his lane and drives the bus.

Correction. He hasn't had the WRs to beat good teams.

When Gallup is back, especially when he's fully healthy, then that makes Lamb, Brown et al, even better.

I'm not sure NFL coaches, who actually watch game film, are as giddy about Cooper Rush as some Cowboys fans.

I swear if I see Tom Brady mentioned again...
The LA defense might be giddy for this coming game

Like with every game Cooper Rush has started, it's going to depend on how well the offensive line protects him.
I think it will come down to every phase. We can't miss FGs or shank punts. The defense has to be playing elite (they have been) and you're right the O line has to be strong. I feel like the O line has been a mostly positive surprise. Plus the 12 personal package is nice. 2 TEs to help, plus Brown a underrated blocker imo.

he's probably gone after this year. Right now, you can still say he's flash in the pan.

Yesterday he was picked twice, lady luck was being kind, she reconsidered.

He was picked once vs NYG, it was reconsidered

Glad though, he can stand on his feet and deliver.

What has he flashed exactly?
