The game passed Landry by after 25+ years of top level coaching. He coached two great runs or maybe it was 1 really long great one (no losing seasons for what, 18-20 years). It looks like the game might have passed Jimmy after 6-7 of the same. Give me Landry's resume and longevity any day - even though I love Jimmy as well.

Tough tough decision. I'd have to go with Jimmy but Landry was great too.

Both were great but 20 straight winning seasons is hard to top (in fact it is still the longest in the NFL - New England is at 19 right now so we shall see if its tied this season). Landry's ingenuity is legendary. He created the 4-3 defense, the flex defense, the Landry shift, and computerized game planning.

Can't go wrong with either though.

Jimmy only had a few years where he really shined. Now they were very bright years.
Landry had his team competitive and challenging for over 20 years.

Jimmy 2 Super Bowl wins in 5 years.

Landry 2 Super Bowl wins in 29 years.
And what did Jimmy do otherwise?
He was like a meteor; burned very brightly but for only a short time. Landry burned not as bright but for a lot longer.

Parcells.

At an age when Landry was running the Cowboys into the dirt as one of the worst teams in the league, Parcells was turning around this franchise while hamstrung by two idiots. From a 5-11 laughing stock to a young playoff contender in 4 short years.

Parcells
Jimmy
McCarthy
Landry/Garrett

The way players are today, they wouldn't have put up with Tom's stoicism, and he wouldn't have put up with their selfishness and showboating.
I dont know, look at Bill Belichick - guy has the personality of a wet rag - but the guy knows football.

Coaches like Landry and Belichick could coach in any era imo - their knowledge of the game and the demand for excellence would be respected...They might not be liked but they will be respected...

Jimmy was definitely a great motivator.

But to be fair there was no free agency back then so it was a lot easier to keep the team together.

If you're going to pluck a coach from the past and have them today, you'd have to assume that they would connect with the players in the same way they did when they were at their peak. Otherwise, the whole mental exercise is moot. Given that assumption, I's pick Landry in his prime. Super intelligent. Created a ton of accountability. Was absolutely the head of the team and was rarely challenged. His men would run through brick walls for him. All great coaches have that I think. Jimmy did, too. But Landry was so unbelievably stable as a coach.

I'd pick Landry. But I'd be happy with Jimmy, too. For that matter, prime Parcells. Switzer is an enigma to me. I don't know if he sucked, was brilliant, or somewhere in between. All the others have been puppets. McCarthy's story isn't finished yet.
