then if he was just suspended. Look at it this way: he has an absolute massive ego. That GENIUS label had to taste so good- everyone starting to say he was the master and BP just got him started, etc. Now for the REST OF HIS LIFE he will be getting the little snide remarks, the digs, the eye rolls, etc. Everything he has accomplished is tarnished- HEAVILY. Those SBs that the Pats just barely won- now they are all in many peoples minds have great big *'s on every single one of them. Like we ping the Skins for their strike wins- only EVERYONE will be doing it for the Pats. And he will be hearing this till the day he croaks. So I actually think the REAL punishment has nothing to do with the Commish.

He would still get that even had he been suspended, but those are all great points.

Yes, his ego will really be limited considering he can still compete for a Superbowl and has the 49ers first round pick. And how would being suspended not cause people to question him? Nice Logic!

Suspending Bellichek will hurt his ego more than imposing a fine. Suspending Bellichek for 3-4 games will hurt the Pats chances of competing for a Superbowl. If his suspension cost his team a Superbowl berth, the media would raise that issue incessantly in the post-season. Now, the Pats can still compete for a Superbowl and if they win, everyone will forget this scandal. The media will always positively spin events in the case of a winner; look how the media turned alleged murder witness Ray Lewis into a hero after the Ravens won the Superbowl.

YOu just do not get it. His ego is going to get cut and sliced daily and from now on. One could call it the death by a 1000 small cuts. It will be with him for life.

So now all the sudden he is going to care what people think? Not likely.

I have read a Pats camera guy said back in 90's Pats were paranoid that Bill Belichick was doing this back in the 1990's with Cleveland.

Pats coach was Parcells, who might have paranoid for a reason?

Previous to 2006 I don't believe this was a NFL rule? So exactly what rule did he cheat 2000-2006? And he was "cheating" in 1990's with Browns and sucked.

Can someone post facts on when the NFL officially banned video recording? Thats an interesting topic.

I believe Tony Dungy videotaped defensive signals too for years-2006, I believe, was when they put the ban.

Frankly-I think this whole "Belichick cheated" is getting a little overblown. For one, he didn't break any rules during the 3 Super Bowl runs. It wasn't until recently that he did.

burmafrd, I beg to differ.

there is nothing that would attach shame to this morally challenged person than to be suspended for cheating. that is something that would become a tagline, would follow him everywhere, with every game, loss or victory, right down to the Hall of Fame voting.

folks will forget how much he was fined, and even a lost draft pick will eventually dwindle in importance, but has there even been an NFL HC suspended for cheating?

Goodell could have spit in Belicheat's coffin (my #1 goal in life since Mumbles persecuted TG) with a suspension - but he wouldn't do it - nor will he investigate further, is my guess.

As Tony Dungy told ESPN the other nite 'everybody DOESN'T do it' (tho Pats fans are claiming in unsion they do). Belicheat is a whole different level of 'competitive advantage', one, (in Dungy's words), that ignores 'the code of honor'.

Mumbles will be hearing it, all right, but nowhere near like he would if he were suspended for cheating. Luckily for him, Goodell was made to realize the sheer magnitude of suspending a nfl head coach for cheating - what that would signify for the integrity of the entire game - so Pondscum got off easy.

The NFL made a concerted effort by putting a ban on it in 2006. Bellichek arrogantly dismissed the rule and tried to see how long he could get away with doing it. He was fully aware that it was against league rules. That is cheating regardless of how you try to spin. If you know the rule and then deliberately try to bypass it, that is cheating regardless of how large or little of a competitive edge it provides. We criticize athletes for using steroids because it's against the rules. However, we are supposed to give a coach a pass because he did the same. I'm a physician and I can assure you that steroids doesn't really impact a player's performance. It helps in recovery time but steroids are not going to make your run faster or improve your hand/eye coordination contrary to what a lot of people think or say. Steroids will provide an edge but not to the degree a lot of people think. There are many side effects that steroids provide that can actually hamper a player's performance too such as elevating lipids and increasing adipose tissue in certains areas in addition to muscle hypertrophy. They can also suppress your immune system therebye making you more prone to infection. Of course, you never read about those side effects, you just read about steroids transforming a player into a superathlete. But we criticize steroid use because its against the rules as we should!
