Parcells not surprised by Romo's resiliency

Superstar columnist Tim Cowlishaw checked in Bill Parcells to see what the grumpy old coach thought of Tony Romo's performance against the Giants. The Tuna didn't quite break out the anointing oil, but he had some nice things to say.

"You don't ever know for sure how a guy's going to respond," Parcells said.

"But I thought he was enough of an emotional guy, a 'What's Next' kind of guy, like a baseball pitcher. 'What's the next pitch, what do we throw now?'
"The way last season ended, a thing like that can ruin a player. But I didn't think that would happen to Tony."

No matter what you think of Parcells, you've got to give him credit for leaving a long-awaited franchise QB at Valley Ranch.

Sure, the scouts, Sean Payton and David Lee deserve props for signing Romo as an undrafted free agent and grooming him. But Parcells is the guy that kept Romo on the roster as a rookie and eventually promoted him over Drew Henson, Jerry's much-hyped bonus baby. And Parcells pulled the trigger on making Romo the starter over Jerry's objections last season.

That's part of the reason Romo never took shots at Parcells while other Cowboys fired away following his departure.

BP made the right calls on most of the critical personell decisions when it came right down to it. Who has he let go that has really shined elsewhere?

Yeah lets not forget all the potential busts he left on the roster also.

Point well taken. I for one still give BP alot of credit for what he did leave in Dallas. This team is 90% Parcell no matter how you look at it. This team was on the brink of stardom and if Wade can add just a lil output to the defense than there is a chance for something special here.

False. JJ never objected to Romo being the starter. It was always BP who decided who played on the field.

Are not 'potential busts' and 'potential players' one in the same?

If Romo didn't fumble the snap i had a good feeling we had a shot at the super bowl.

Just a gut feeling.

This team would be a set up for a dynasty right now if Parcells hadn't wasted away so many early round draft picks.

Last year, that team was good enough to, at least, reach the divisional round of the playoffs. Now, we have had a chance to retool the roster somewhat.

We're potentially stronger on the offensive line with the addition of Davis. We have a rook at outside linebacker who had a fairly strong opening game in Spencer.

Currently, we have some weaknesses with the absence of Glenn, Ferguson, Ellis and (Eduncan, please proceed to Step 2) Newman, but this is still a playoff caliber team. Romo just has to play within himself and the quarterback part of the equation will remain solid.

Step 2: Hey Eduncan! How's tricks? :)

Care to endulge me in how that is? I am dying to know how Parcells kept us from being a dynasty...?

I think I have heard everything imaginable blamed on parcells now.......but there is always tomorrow, and parcells may do something today to cause us to lose....who knows...

I'm not a Parcells fan AT ALL, but I think he did a far better job obtaining talent for this team than coaching it.

Just the guys who went to NO - but they weren't good fits here and wouldn't have seen the field

Agree. All you have to do is look down our roster when BP arrived and now that he is gone. EVERYBODY misses on draft picks, but he definately left us FAR better than he received us.

JJ initially was concerned on pulling Bledsoe. Expectations were real high last season.

In my heart of hearts Dallas would have gone deeper last year with Bledsoe. But Romo exceeded my initial expectations and long term it was a brilliant roll of the dice by Parcells.

Parcells has some flaws but player personell decisions clearly is not one of them. He turned around a horrid roster and has this team primed.

I tip my hat to Bill.

Actually Jerry was pretty vocal after the first Giants game when Bledsoe was benched. Going with an unknown in Romo vs the known w/Bledsoe made him question the move.

Not to mention he repeatedly said all last summer that he has to get this kid ready and show jerry....No one understood until the panthers game what he meant....

I remember hearing Jerry was very concerned about what would happen the rest of the season & probably was vocal about it--something he shouldnt have been if he were a good GM--publicly. Romo's play against the Giants in that game probably increased his blood pressure.

However, I think in the next game (I think it was against the Panthers) Jerry was probably a lot more relaxed when Romo stepped up his play. Victories over the Colts & Tampa also helped him.

My gut feeling was that if Romo didn't bobble the snap, the Seahawks would have almost certainly scored vs. the Dallas defense.

But we'll never know.

That loss was lost on the play-calling. They essentially had guys off the street playing in their secondary and what do we do? Run the ball all game long. Genius.

Jerry didn't object to Tony being made starter.

He just publically stated his feelings that the team's best chances lay with Bledsoe.

It should be easy enough to look up.
