Carter and Lee

Regardless of what you think of the Carter pick, we have him now. But aren't he and Lee both WILB guys? They're definitely both much smaller than Bradie--so which of them is Bradie's replacement? It almost seems like this pick is just for exotic packages and nickel/dime situations because neither Carter nor Lee seem to be cut out for the strong-side position. Yet he is touted on so many websites this morning to be Bradie James' successor. Of course, we had a proven ILB in Burnett who never got a shot at that job for similar reasons. I'm not knocking the pick, if they felt he was BPA at a position of need, then OK. But I have trouble finding a spot for Carter on the base defensive package.

Am I missing something?

Yeah, this size thing everyone keeps bringing up.

James is 6'2" 245 pounds.

Lee is 6'2" 242 pounds ( I'll also tell you Lee is up to about 250 right now)

Carter is 6'3" 235-245 depending on what measurement you use.

I'm not seeing this huge size difference.

I think they will use him on special teams and on some exotic packages to start out with. By 2012 I think they plan on him to take over for Brady. Carter is 6'3" and 235-240 right now, with the right program I would think that he could bulk up to 250-255 and not lose much quickness.

Interesting... I saw 225 playing weight and 233 post-season weight. A quick Google search gives results all the way from 225-242.

Well, that could be the answer right there. I guess he gained a lot of weight after the season and (hopefully) he carries 242 right now with no problem.

Butch Davis was on NFLN and raved about the fact that he can play any LB position and is excellent in pass coverage. How refreshing, a LB that isn't a liability in pass coverage.

I like this pick, and many have said he was a consensus top 15 pick if it wasn't for his injury. ACL injuries are a big deal, but not what they were 20 years ago. Athletes recover from them very well, so I guess we'll see.

Regardless what he weights "right now", he'll put on some muscle weight in an NFL strength and conditioning program.

I'll be the first to admit I wasn"t wild about this pick or the Murray pick, still not happy about it, but size doesnt look like an issue to me. Just looking at his highlights he looks plenty big enough to me. Will he take on blocks, is he physical enough? I don't know. Mayock, and the guy has grown on me, loves the pick. Loves it.

Butch davis raving about carter right now on NFLnetwork

I remember that SI article about Jimmy and his early Cowboy coaching staff. Jimmy said, when listening to his coaches evaluate a player, he had to consider who the coach was. He said Tony Wise thought everyone sucked and that Butch Davis thought everyone was great. I love Butch but he was brutal at Cleveland in the War Room.

Not saying Butch is wrong about Carter, because I think Carter will be good. Just made me think of that line years ago in the SI article.

I think his deficiencies can be worked on with good coaching and Rob Ryan and Eberflus will go a long way into getting the best out of him.

I think he will become our version of the Jets' David Harris.

Great post.

B. James probably doesn't like this pick.

To me Bradie isn't worried in the least. Carter is not a first and second down ILB in the 3-4. Not now. Maybe 3 years from now if develops as a tackler. If you get rid of Brooking and James then you're going to be pretty soft inside.
