From the Fort Worth Star-Telegram:

Team owner Jerry Jones said the Cowboys expect Carter to be a big contributor in the 2011 season, but he guaranteed roster spots for veteran linebackers Bradie James and Keith Brooking.

“We will have Bradie and Brooking on the team, absolutely and unequivocally,” Jones said.

Would think this is a no-brainer for this season, but some members have shown it doesn't work that way.

Any reason for him to mention James there? Who would ever think he'd be cut? lol

Never thought James would be cut. Brooking is a huge liability in coverage and last year late on tackles consistantly.

It was probably just the way the question was phrased.

....guess he got into the martinis again. My GOD, Brooking is older than DIRT, and James....has plenty of tread left on his tire but to come out and say that, in that manner...... just no reason at ALL. He's a narcissist. Always has been, always will be.:banghead:

I would assume it it because he stated that Bruce Carter, being a 2nd round pick should become a starter at some point this season in the press conference. Add that to Sean Lee, a second rounder, that should be becoming a starter and Jerry was forced to clarify this point about both linebackers.

James is in the last year of his contract I believe. I feel neither brooking or james will be RE-signed when their contracts expire. And neither will be on the roster in 2012.

They obviously want

Ware - Lee - Carter - Spencer

And JJ was not as clear when discussing MBIII and Columbo - and we know what that likely means.

I thought Jason Garrett was making that call....

Yes, I hate when Jerry has to remind us that he's calling all the personnel shots.

What if, after a couple of preseason games, Garrett and Ryan want to cut Brooking for a younger, better player?

There are a lot of what ifs.

So is James. Neither one of our ILB's are good (or even average) in coverage.

Now that I think of it, Ware is probably our best coverage LB. :banghead:

We all know that Jerry Jones sometimes says one thing then does another. Just JJ as usual. You may be right, he may be crazy, but it just might be a lunatic we're looking for.

Sounds like a response to a stupid question where the media may have asked if Brooking or James were going to be released due to the Carter selection...I wasn't there, but the response doesn't sound like something Jerry just volunteered.

The sad thing is we drafted Sean Lee to replace Brooking, but found out he wasn't very good in the nickel, so he became the better backup for James. Now we have drafted a LB to try and back up Brooking and take on the pass coverage role.

I like that we have solid backups for these two vets.

They should have been asking him about Leon Williams' spot. :)

I the the DC may have had some say as to whether he thought they would fit his scheme. I'm probably wrong but on obvious passing downs you can take Brooking and James out for Lee and Carter. Then next year, Carter and Lee become your starters.

You underestimate the stupidity of our fanbase.

This shouldn't be news to people...but it's good to hear nonetheless. Keeping a veteran like Brooking around is going to be crucial for our young LBs.
