Punter Mat McBriar will work out for the Cowboys today

7/24/2012 7:54:53 AM

Free agent Mat McBriar, the Cowboys’ punter since 2004, will work out for the Cowboys on Tuesday, according to Brandon George of the Dallas Morning News who cites a source.

McBriar worked out for the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday. He’s trying to come back from off-season surgery to remove a cyst below his left knee that plagued him last year. McBriar had surgery in February and has been punting the last several weeks in San Diego.

The Cowboys have been following McBriar’s progress closely over the last few weeks and want to get a better look at how far he’s come since his surgery to help determine whether they want to re-sign the two-time Pro Bowler or not.

The Cowboys placed McBriar on injured reserve last season. The Cowboys have two punters on their roster in Chris Jones, who replaced McBriar last season, and Delbert Alvarado.

Was told by a respected source yesterday that McBriar has a lot of faith in Chris Jones. Just sharing that with you. I myself, don't.

I hope he's completely healthy and we keep him.

I guess we'll know pretty soon.

Would hate to lose him to the eagles...but if Chris Jones is better...then hey.

Don't hold on, just to hold on

+1 ... a successful tryout, thumbs up from the med staff and Mat's re-signing would be welcome news to me, too.

I would love to see McBriar come back if he is producing like he did before the injury, if not I was happy with the job Chris Jones did. Either way I think we will have a quality punter on the roster

McBriar has faith in Chris Jones? Or the Cowboys do?

I can't see him not wanting to come back here. The only way I don't see him coming back is if the club decides to move in another direction, whether it be because of money or his health.

I'm all for "may the best man win" at Punter. I think if Mat is back near or at full health, he will be our best option.

FWIW, I read this tweet after Mat McBriar worked out for Philly on Monday:

Of the 4 punters the Eagles worked out,
Mat McBriar had best workout. I'd expect
the Eagles to sign the 2-time Pro Bowler
later this week.

I've gotta believe if the 'Boys like what they see, and Jerry wants him... Mat stays with the Dallas Cowboys.

Totally agree. Jones wasn't a liability and had a pretty decent leg.

If the foot problem is past him, keep McBriar. I take a proven commodity every time.

McBriar is a weapon. Chris Jones is a guy.

I consider McBriar to be the best punter in Cowboys history. I don't know if he can be at or approach that level of performance in the future and will leave that up the the coaches and team doctors to decide. I would love for him to come back if he's at full strength. We don't need to be worrying about the punter in games.

McBriar's ability to flop the ball inside the 20 is far more valuable than the ability to punt it 60 yards. Long punts lead to long returns. McBriar has the ability to punt long AND place the ball, which is rare.

If he looks anywhere close to the way he looked prior to the leg problems, I don't think he'll leave Valley Ranch without a contract. It may save some money to go with Jones, but the Cowboys don't have any pressing cap concerns, and Jerry learned the hard way what happens when you go with too many young players at crucial positions. As erod said, McBriar is a weapon, when healthy. Jones is just a decent punter.

After hearing about McBriar trying out for the Eagles and the twitter post speculating the possible signing by the Eagles, I was concerned that maybe the 'Boys weren't doing their due diligence regarding McBriar.

News of a tryout is music to my ears. If he's the best man, sign him up. If not, we move on but, I'm glad we are checking him out from all angles before cutting ties. That dude, when healthy, is a very important weapon.

When healthy he is a legit weapon and accounts for a ton of invisible yardage via field position.

If he looks good today I dont expect they'll let him leave.

I hope you are right, he has been a consistent performer for the team. Kickers that accurate do not grow on trees.

A couple of thoughts.

1. The Cowboys would be nuts to let McBriar leave town unless it's to head west to Oxnard.

2. To the OP: I love irony.

TBH, I don't really trust our medical staff.
