Take it for what it's worth, babe talked about lovies defense having 44 takeaways and leading the league in interceptions.

Babe said something interesting.

He said firing a coach over the phone is something Jason didn't want to do but when a guy becomes available they want maybe they have to move on it.

So I guess lovie is a real candidate then? Maybe the candidate?

We might finally have a good defense.

Babe also said its not over and there is more to come.

Lovie has been available for more than a week. Why the rush now if it's him?

This is the signing that actually makes the most sense to me, given the circumstances.

Probably because other teams with head coaching vacancies are after him as well.

Yes, but Lovie was also a HC candidate. Maybe those opportunities have dried up and he put out there he would be interested in being a DC so they decided they needed to be ready to scoop him up.

I'm not saying it's going to happen. Just putting out one reason why they might not have gone after him earlier.

He probably wanted the time to see where he stands re: the likely HC options. When and if he came into play as a possible DC, we did a temperature check, and, if we got a warm read, decided to move quickly. Gives Rob a chance to find another gig, and answers why we'd make the hire before most of the playoff coaching options are free for interviews. He's a good fit in terms of our needs, too.

If you don't move quickly, though, who knows what deal falls through in the head coaching carousel? Anything could happen in a week.

Whew...you had me scared. I saw the thread title BABE LAUFENBERG...

and I thought for sure the message was gonna be that Jerry named the Babe-meister as def. coord.

If Lovie was going to get one of the spots he wouldve already had it.

He's interviewing in Philadelphia on Thursday.

If he was the guy here I can't imagine he still takes head coaching interviews.

I dont have the answer for who to get as def. coord so I probably shouldnt say this...but I would rather bring in a guy that is likely to stay here more than one year.

Who really follows college football? I dont. But to those that do: isnt there a young, creative, dynamic, successful defensive wiz in the college ranks that isnt ready to be a head coach but could make the transition to NFL def coord??

How about Alabama DC Kirby Smart?

He's only 37.

Nope, Kirby is setting himself up for a College HC gig

Where would he go?

Another SEC team...say perhaps Georgia?

He'd be going against his mentor Saban in not only recruiting players, but head to head where the comparisons would never end and that certainly doesn't bode well for him. I suppose he could coach out of the SEC, but why would he after all these years playing and coaching in that conference.

I would say USC. Not South Carolina.

It's a gold mine.

EDIT: Back to topic. Everyone feels Lovie was not the issue, he will take a job somewhere...as a HC...perhaps Dallas.

Getting Lovie Smith in here to run the defense would be a great move.

Only move that really makes sense in getting rid of Rob Ryan.

The timing only makes sense, as does the change in philosophy.

Not sure I follow the idea.

Dallas wanted to act quickly so they waited until Lovie was out of HC candidacy?

Once that happened they presumably fired Ryan without Lovie being on board or is Lovie on board?

If he's on board, why the need to force Garrett into making the phone call when he'd rather not do it over phone?

If he's not on board, what is meaning of the move? Show Lovie that Dallas is in deed a potential landing spot? Open up the position so he knows there's more than just talk of happening?

Seems like an odd connection to draw considering the waiting period followed by the hasty dismissal of Ryan.

I agree. Not sure i'm following the idea. The timing to this is odd.

If you have someone on board, then why do you have to rush to fire the previous guy?
