So Stephen is now powerless in the organization? I get confused. Aren't you one of the guys who tells us Jerry doesn't strong arm his coaches? But he does his VP of Personnel?

I won't excuse poor performance. Stephen has been as inept in his responsibilities as Jerry has at his. In terms of results, Mike. Not some scenario I created in my head.

This threads always crack me up. This season, we were nailed with an unfair cap penalty and tagged Spencer, and yet we still found a way to sign Waters, extend Lee, and have spare money to roll over into next season. Yes, some seasons we won't be able to go crazy like when we signed Carr, but we'll always be able to extend our guys and sign needed FAs to fill holes.

The free loan analogy doesn't really work, especially in relatively stable league-wide cap environment. There really isn't a carrying cost / borrowing cost of "cap" dollars. Teams are essentially on a fixed budget every year (team cap) and when players are extended, they are generally given more dead/guaranteed money which increases the carrying cost of players in future periods. There is nothing free about it, it's just a period shift.

All teams do it, it's just a question of purpose and degree. Retaining good players that are young enough to potentially be productive throughout the majority of their new contracts is a good use of restructuring / resigning. As is freeing up resources for season changing FA's in a likely playoff run. But, constantly balancing the current period books by increasing players' guaranteed money crowds out future period resources limiting teams' ability to sign valuable free agents and can also force organizations to hold onto unproductive vets in order to avoid dead money hits. I think that the FO believes and has believed that the current nucleus is sufficient to warrant all of these extensions, maybe they will be right in the next year or two.

I simply said there are times when Jerry gets his way.

Nothing more, nothing less.

If Stephen wasn't a "Jones" we wouldn't be having this discussion.

You would simply be blaming ownership and the GM.

I'm still POed that we got that ridiculous fine for going over the salary cap in an uncapped year. I was wanting Jerry to team up with Dan Snyder in a lawsuit against the NFL to get that overturned. I don't think he did it because he wants to host another Super Bowl in our stadium.

Right. You said all the bad decisions? That was Jerry strong arming Stephen. Something you couldn't possibly know.

We most certainly would be having this discussion whether his name was Jones, Smith or whatever. He's been terrible at his job. He's a far bigger problem than any coach or player.
