Watching Terrence Newman and Mike Jenkins, they are playing well and disciplined. Like they rarely did in D. Seeing how poorly they played at the end of their careers here, and how poorly Claiborne has played so far in his career here, I am more and more convinced each day that the defensive back coaches for this franchise are just piss poor.

I caught a lot of grief saying Newman was still a player but couldn't stay well enough to play like he can. Jenkins was the same. But I'd buy part of it is coaching. You always have to let players play to their strengths.

a good passrush cures alot of wholes in a defense. That is why it was so alarming that we didn't go after more passrushers last season. I thought we were going to sign one and draft one at the LEAST. We did neither smh.

It was never the players. It was only a subset of our more talkative fans that aren't particularly adept at evaluating players in the first place.

If you're going to get angry at whatever player is in the frame on a passing touchdown, or if you can't get past a rookie ole after 3 years of playing hard for the team, you're going to be in for a surprise now and then.

We got a great tight end in the second round for our 12 package that we're using as our base offense. We're Scoring loads of points, lookin better than New England did last year. Garretts a genius.

Say what you will, but Newman was getting his butt whopped on a regular basis towards the end here. The Jenkins hate, however, I never got. We spent a 1st on him and he was young and talented, why not keep him around for cheap?

I agree. Newman had a great career for us but he was getting older, played injured a lot, and was getting burned. I don't have a problem with getting rid of a guy as he starts to get older (although we'd never do that to Romo/Ware/Witten). I don't like how the fans treated him though. He had a great career for us and he got the Roy Williams (safety) treatment. Not to mention, Williams had a great career for us too.

I don't get why we invested so much in Carr and Claiborne though. Like you said, Jenkins was a 1st rounder who made the Pro Bowl and played his butt off for us. He did get injured all the time though (Sean Lee syndrome). But I think Jenkins and Scandrick would have made a solid pair of starting corners and we could have invested heavily into D-line and pass rushers. Instead, we invested heavily in two corners, something we really didn't need.

We're just hypocritical if you ask me. We cut Newman because he was getting old, but we'd never cut Ware or Witten. We cut Jenkins because he couldn't stay healthy, but we'd never cut Sean Lee.

Terrence Newman is playing on a $2.5 million a year contract instead of a $10 million a year contract. That's $7.5 more cap space a year the Bengals can spend on fortifying the team around Newman.

Terrence Newman was a fine $2.5 million a year corner in Dallas. He was an absolutely terrible $10 million corner in Dallas. It's the GM's incredibly silly decisions that set it up for failure.

Yeah he was. Him playing well now doesn't erase what happened. He was wrecked over the last 6 games of his last year in Dallas.

How about this little tidbit of irony.

Brandon Carr is tied for 45th with Terrence Newman, according to PFF.

Morris Claiborne is graded 87th and the player who is immediately following him.......none other than Mike Jenkins.

Doesn't mean much really but it does kind of make you wonder what is going on when their castoffs go onto perform just as well elsewhere as their high-priced acquisitions are currently performing.

The book around here on Newman definitely had a lot of frustration with his contract during each of his last three seasons, but the overwhelming majority of the complaints were strictly relating to his play on the field. And not just at the ends of the season when he was injured, worn down, and everybody and his brother could see he was playing poorly.

Dave Campo sucked...

Our defense got no pressure and part of it was the offenses fault, i.e. our defense couldn't take risks...

Newman was getting beat on a little too often because he had to play hurt, didn't have good enough safety support. got left on an island too much esp for an oft hurt player and had a pass rush that wasn't optimal.

Players don't fall off drastically unless they're too out of shape to play, addiction, disease, and injury. So you're saying he sucked here but suddenly doesn't suck there. Kinda like Free sucked last year but didn't this year after not sucking a year or so ago before last year.

It's a miracle!

Spencer, Ware, Ratliff, Hatcher, etc -- I thought they were all pretty decent pass rushers. They were there playing in front of T. New right?

Some people fail to acknowleedge that maybe the pressure with playing for a the Cowboys and having a owner like Jerry as your Owner/GM may do more harm to players than good. Its not about "coaching". Its not about the "talent". This team could have the same personnel as the Seahawks and it would still underachieve.
