Keep Garrett, fire Garrett's system

I like Jason Garrett as a head coach. I think he's a good organizer, tries to build his team the right way and isn't bad as a motivator.

The only thing I can't stand about him is his offensive system. I think Garrett got to used to the 1990s Cowboys teams that could line up and beat teams running the same play over and over again. Week to week, this team can't do that and it only rarely displays the creativity to allow it to overcome those shortcomings.

Other teams roll their quarterback out when teams show the ability to penetrate the pocket (saw too good examples of that last week). Not Dallas.

Other teams use play-action on a regular basis (with or without a running game) to suck up the linebackers and open things up in coverage. Not Dallas ... the Cowboys instead decide one of the rare times it should use it is on third-and-long when teams know they're going to pass.

Other teams move their best players around when defenses are committed to stopping them. Not Dallas.

Other teams use draw plays and screens at unexpected times when defenses are overaggressive. Not Dallas.

At least Bill Parcells understood he had to throw in a few Jap plays to keep defenses on their toes, but Garrett seems to only seems to believe in his take-what-the-defense-is-giving mantra, even if that's playing right into the defense's hands.

If it wasn't for Tony Romo, Garrett's system would be seen for exactly what it is, a no-trick pony.

I suspect if we don't win the division and Garrett stays, we will have a whole new OC and scheme. That would be the only way Jerry can sell him to the fans. I don't see how he comes back under the same circumstances otherwise.

The good news is Garrett has not been extended and I haven't even heard talks about it publicly. That, to me, shows that Jerry isn't convinced either. I still think he is gone if we miss the playoffs but in the off-chance he stays, Callahan will be fired with a new OC coming in with his own scheme.....I hope anyways.

If Jerry is so reluctant to fire Jason, make him the GM then or at least some position other than HC. He has an analytic mind and would be great for scouting players and/or upper management. That way he saves face and keeps him in the organization saying he knew all along Garrett had what it took but was in the box, not on the field....or something to that effect.

I could certainly stomach that, and actually feel bad for Callahan because he's having to run Garrett's scheme instead of his own.

It's funny (in a sad way) the success Callahan has had when running his own scheme compared to what's happening to him now using Garrett's. He's a West Coast guy and Garrett just dabbles in the West Coast while also incorporating Air Coryell. But I really don't think it matters that his scheme is a mix. I think what affects this team is that lack of creativity in the playbook. And I'm not just talking about trick plays.

He does not have a system. That is the reason he has not found success. How about fire Garrett, get a system.

I'm a big believer in the head coach being a big-picture guy and bringing in sharp minds at offensive and defensive coordinator to run each side of the ball. I think Garrett has the ability to be that kind of head coach, but he's got to let the offense go.

(Wade Phillips is a good recent example of a coach who isn't a big-picture guy, which is why he's a much better coordinator than coach.) Garrett can run the day-to-day operation. He's a good planning man, but his ideas on offense are too basic for a team that can't just line up and dominate the other team.

So Callahan is going to be the patsy this year?

At some point we are going to run out of people to fire because Opie cant get it done.

Not sure. Garrett might just take back the play-calling and keep Callahan as offensive line coach (if Callahan accepts that).

If by patsy, you mean excuse, then I do think to some extent the offensive woes will be blamed on the change at offensive coordinator.

However, I think the main patsy will be the defense because of injuries and changing schemes.

So we fire Grandpa, fire or demote Callahan, and Opie stays...........................................................CHAMPIONSHIP!!!!

I don't think Kiffin gets fired. He might retire, but his defense is predicated on pass rushers and he wasn't dealt a full hand this year, and I think Garrett and Jones will keep that in consideration.

Would love to see Marinelli take over for him, though.

I do hope Jones at least forces Garrett's hand to do more than that. I could live with Callahan as line coach and Garrett as head coach, just as long as someone else comes in as offensive coordinator. (With Callahan here, wouldn't mind it being a West Coast guy.)

I just dont see how a team can set the NFL record for the worst defense in the history of the league..................and the exact same coordinator is brought back the following year.

would love to see the current playbook trashed and a new OC in place, if not a new HC and staff. Same goes for defense.

Head coaches build the teams in their image (as they should). Garrett's image isn't working, fire Garrett (and Jerry too if only that was possible).

If Garrett as a head coach cannot see the failure of his team and hold people responsible for their departments and the failure those departments might be adding to the over-all team experience, then what good is bringing in another system. If the system he is most familiar with can slip past his keen eye the weaknesses, then what would a new system do to Hawkeye Garrett?

Then we would also need a coach in charge of calling or not calling timeouts, and a coach for challenging plays. Also a coach who would be in charge in the final 2 minutes of the game. And a clapping coach, he would be in charge of telling Jason when it is ok to clap.

Maybe then I would be ok with Red J staying on for next year.

A lame duck coach in the final year of his contract and he won't even have his own offensive system in place? Why bother? Just fire him if you are going to do that.

Like him or not, he has the right to control his own destiny.

He is already neutered by an overbearing Owner/GM, does everything need to be cut off?
