Because we have so much cap space to claim or recover and probably two players who will be
June 1st cuts. I suspect that we will wait until after the draft to see what holes we can fill.
After June 1st, money get freed and we could go after whomever is left from the pile. That's why
we have Will McClay who can find guys sitting on the couch that can get 7 sacks. With our
finances, we can only go bargain basement especially if we find a way to keep Ware.

Tillman has said that he has no interest in playing safety.
Was that recently?

He will probably get more than I would want them to pay him anyway. I just like the idea of a Coordinator bringing in some of his guys similar to how Parcells brought in many of his past players.

Until he's offered more to be a 33 year old safety as opposed to a 33 year old corner.

Charles Tillman: 'I don't want to play safety anywhere'

The cornerback told "The McNeil and Spiegel Show" on WSCR-AM that he doesn't know if he will return to Chicago but is certain he won't change positions. "I don't want to play safety anywhere," Tillman said Wednesday morning.

Coming off an injury-plagued season, the 33-year-old soon-to-be free agent believes he will be on an NFL squad in 2014.

"My gut is I will be on an NFL team next year," Tillman said. "Everyone knows how the process works. It's a business. If I'm here, sweet. If I'm not, that's business ... There's no hard feelings. I love Chicago. Chicago's been nothing but great -- great owners, great organization, great teammates."

None of those guys really do much for me. Personally, I would rather bring in some young undrafted guys who are hungry and let them compete.

Interesting.

I didn't really see him as a full time Safety, but maybe as a situational thing similar to what they did with Carr at times in 2012.

I'm sure that he sees himself as a #1 CB. CBs that are not over confident probably don't exist in the NFL.

I know we are buying into the idea of DL rotation but all the DL can't be mediocre rotational players, there have to be some horses up front who will be difference makers

For me, need to find a way to sign Byrd and Joseph
Both young and productive starters that will free us up in the draft to not reach for players
Then a couple of draft picks like Donald and Marcus smith can really begin to make a difference on defense

We all know (or should know) that Dallas cannot "do whatever they want in free agency".

There will be no Greg Hardy,

That being affirmed, I am fairly certain the Cowboys will sign some cheap players, a couple at least.

If they do not dump all their money at Hatcher, they will have to sign some bodies and also make it so they do not have glaring holes entering the draft.

Rotoworld had an article that named Falcons DT Corey Peters as a fit.

http://www.rotoworld.com/articles/nfl/46339/309/free-agency-fits?pg=1

Unfortunate thing for him is that he tore his Achilles in the final game of the season. I would as soon not bother.

The names I see that might be worth it and cheap enough are:

Bills DL Alex Carrington - has position flexibility. Does have injury issues and played in only a few games last season.

Colts ILB Pat Angerer - might be want a better chance to start elsewhere, but he is a solid middle linebacker that the Colts are not bringing back. With Lee's injury concerns, we have to have a good backup.

Bucs OLB Dekota Watson - flip flopped between OLB and end last year after losing his starting job.

Bears CB Kelvin Hayden - very experienced in the system having played in it in both Indianapolis and Chicago

There are some others I am discounting (the Bears two defensive linemen for example) mainly due to what I think will be will be an active market that we will not be able to be players in.

Curious to see what the opinions are on the realistic options are out there.

I think your original premise is completely wrong about being able to sign players, but I do agree that mid priced FAs is usually the best way to go anyways. But If Hardy was available they should and could easily be players. They should still go after Melton or Joseph at DT and Byrd at FS. A vet ballhawk/qb of the defense could upgrade that unit immediately and let Church and Wilcox continue to improve.

Jerry should sign his namesakes Jacoby for deep-threat 3rd-WR with size and speed and Arthur from BAL for DE.

The 2 positions I want to address in FA are DT and FS

At DT I would look at Clinton McDonald and Tyson Jackson

FS: Chris Clemons, Chris Gamble, Louis Delmas

2 of those guys + a DT and DE in the 1st 3 rounds and another depth LB somewhere and we could have a defense capable of keeping the team in most games.

You guys are aware the thread heading is "LOW-cost FA's", right?

Joseph I'm not sure about, but the guys I listed aren't going to break the bank by any means. We could create 6 or 7 million in cap space no problem and sign McDonald and Chris Clemons. Not saying we are going to be competing for the highest paid free agents or anything, but we don't need to be shopping in the bargain bin either.
