You list is pretty solid.

But it is difficult to leave out Aikman, Meredith, Romo, Martin, Woodson, Howley, Jordan, Harris, D Pearson, Dorsett, and of course Landry and Johnson.

the problem is the criteria...what makes them a top 5 cowboy?

I would go
Roger Staubach
Troy Aikman
Larry Allen
Randy White
Bob Lilly
apologies to next runners up (not in order): LR.Jordan, E.Smith, M.Irvin. T.Romo, D.Ware, T.Dorsett, D.Woodson, J.Witten, D.Pearson

I love Tony Dorsett as much as the next guy. He is one of my personal favorites but I can't put him in the top five. He's really not even the best running back in team history. With all due respect of course.

Maybe. Dorsett behind those lines would've been fun to see. Emmitt was better though.
I think the rb position, back then, was able to impact the game more. At least I sure remember him more then Randy.
I was young though.

This list becomes tougher every decade, but below is who I see as the greatest during each time period. I had a hard time thinking of my top 5 from the most recent time period and left it at 3. I think any overall top 5 list starts with the first decade then you sub players out. Personally for me its Landry, Staubach, Lilly, R. White, and Emmitt as the 5 greatest ever.

Landry, Staubach, Lilly, R. White, Dorsett

Emmitt, Aikman, Irvin, Allen, Woodson

Romo, Witten, Ware

Mr. Cowboy, Bob Lilly
Captain America, Roger Staubach
The Rushing Champion, Emmitt Smith
The NFL's Strongest man, Larry Allen
The Manster, Randy White

cannot argue with any of those picks. IF this is just players.

You've clumped together quite a large time period with your first list. Lilly was great long before Staubach even joined the team. There is a definite time period difference from when Lilly retired and Randy White or Tony Dorsett joined the team. I would really consider them as different eras.
