I like looking at the various mocks folks post and I think a lot of us (me included) assume that if the Cowboys bring in a player to visit, that they like him. With this assumption, most put those players in our mocks.

Have we heard any rumors or got an indication, that a player visited, but after meeting with the player they don't feel like he will be on there board? There has to be some that once they meet them in person, that maybe there mental make-up will not fit the team they are trying to build.

Very good point. I posted a similar thought last week. Bringing a player in is part of the decision making process. Obviously, not all decisions are going to be in favor of the player once they've had a chance to meet them.

I don't know if some players will be removed from the board or just rated so low that they are highly unlikely to be available at the lower ranking.

With all the gamesmanship that goes on I bet they would really like to keep that under wraps since the ones they don't like would serve as a pretty good smoke screen to other teams.

Has to have happened before. I am pretty sure Broaddus said that a scout or WR coach was turned off of Randy Moss after meeting with him but I could have heard that wrong. I think that decision to not take him was Jerry making a PR type decision after a few years of things/players acting up ala Irvin's off field stuff.

I do know that they had a Cowboy rep in the home town (nitro IIRC) during the draft and that was one reason that Randy was so mad because he really did believe he was going to be a Cowboy.

I am sure there are many that they want to investigate their makeup more than their football skills. I know that a good amount of the guys we have drafted over the past few years are ones that have been brought in.

It matters more for Dallas than a lot of teams. While some teams use the visits as a diversion (what everyone loves to call a "smokescreen"), the Cowboys end up selecting a couple of visitors each draft, more than average.

Interesting question, but probably one we would never be given an answer about.

Did not know about them selecting more than the average of players that visit. Pretty interesting. thanks

This is a good question, but I don't think we will ever know...part of the meetings are to scope that player not just for the draft, but for when you go up against them too, so any time you meet with a player in this scenario, there are benefits

From Broaddus:
I remember an example from Randy Moss’ pre-draft visit to Valley Ranch. The wide receivers coach at the time, Dwain Painter, brought up in a final draft meeting with Jerry Jones that he was turned off by Moss and his attitude. That feedback ultimately affected Jones’ decision not to draft him.

That is one reason why sometimes the Cowboys are astonishingly easy to telegraph. They do not do a lot of work on players and positions they are not interested in. Other teams are the opposite and go to great lengths to disguise their intentions.

If the Cowboys are the most transparent, teams like the Bengals, Cardinals, Broncos, Packers, Commanders and Giants, for example, are very hard to figure out--at least in terms of particular player interest.

They would have draft Randy Moss if not for Chan Gailey. They apparently had a huge disagreement between Gailey and the scouting dept. on Moss. Irvin's recent legal issues were enough to cause Jerry to be convinced by Gailey not to draft him.

Supposedly Fredericks so impressed the offensive coaches with his smarts that in shot up their board. I'm sure the opposite has also happened.
