Jim Kelly. Dan Marino. Plenty of others had stats fairly competitive with todays. As usual you are wrong- it was the 70's when passing was really hard. 1978 was the first step towards today and it was a steady progression. By the mid 90's todays QBs would have had comparable stats if not quite as good. Aikman was a bus driver most of the time but the real difference was in the playoffs when he did step up. So yes he does belong in the HOF but not because of what he did in the regular season. Pretty much the exact opposite of Dan Marino.

He did a hell of a lot more than drive a bus in that game and it had a trip to the SB riding on it. In the SB 2 weeks later he tossed what was his career high at the time 4 TD passes and completed 73% of his passes en route to being named SB MVP.

He did what he was asked to do within the Cowboys offense and it led to a first ballot HOF career. The HOF shouldn't be all about stats with skill position players because you're dealing with players from different eras who played under different rules in different schemes. Postseason wins and championships matter and Troy Aikman had an 11-5 playoff record and a 3-0 SB record. A QB with a postseason resume like who led a team that dominated a decade deserves to be in the HOF.

Emmitt took over the third quarter of the San Fran game with short passes underneath. Romanowski couldn't cover Emmitt. Troy did have a good game. But the TEAM was rolling at that point. Buffalo just fell apart and Dallas could do no wrong. But it was the defense in the Superbowl that Buffalo could not contend with. They had like 20 takeaways.

The guy if need be could have put up better numbers but Emmitt got a huge share of the workload. I think at one time and maybe still to this day Aikman holds the record for accuracy at the NFL QB competition.

I don't mean to disrespect Troy as much as praise Romo who gets berated a lot more. But Aikman had Irvin, Harper and Novachek and only threw 20+ TDs once in his career. ????

That argument is like saying the kicker for a team can kick it really far. But his team scores so much and wins, he never has to kick field goals. But he would be great if....

I think I made a good point. Romo finally had a "Emmitt" type back last year and his numbers still buried anything Aikman ever put together. Sorry to offend the AIkman is god club. Facts are facts

Although I'd like to think Aikman and Hayes are worthy, hard to disagree with some of his other choices. He missed Jerome Bettis though

He falls into the 'lifetime achievement' category with almost 14000 yards rushing while averaging over 1000 yards over his 13 year career.

Quantity has a quality all it's own. I've got no problem with Bettis in the HOF.

as a ND homer I am glad to see the Bus get in. As a football fan I am not pleased. Bettis was never considered one of the top 3 at his position his entire career. To me that is an absolute must as a minimum.

Aikman's first Super Bowl win, had lots of passing,I think the first TD was a pass to Jay Novacek .

Emmitt was having a good game but the Cowboys only had a 4 point lead after the 3rd quarter the game was far from over. They extended the lead to 11 points early in the 4th quarter but SF closed the gap to 4 points again with just over 4 minutes to play. You could feel the momentum switch in their favor but Aikman's 70 yard throw and catch to Harper put a dagger in the 49ers. That play completely deflated their crowd and it was all the Cowboys from there. In the Cowboys first SB vs Buffalo the defense had 9 takeaways not 20. lol The defense played great but Aikman was named the games MVP.

You retire as the 5th ranked RB ever you get in.
Add 91 TDs which is Top 10 and it's automatic.
