What are you guys currently into? I have been able to do a lot of contracting work on the side, so I am buying up various stocks with the extra money. I am doing long term buy and hold investments. Not interested in day trading.

Tobacco
I bought some Reynolds Tobacco (RAI) stock back in July and am probably going to pick up some Altria (MO) stock, as well. I like stocks that pay dividends.

Gold/Silver
I've also been considering some gold or silver. I have never bought either one, but from what I can tell, you basically just buy coins or bullion and keep it secure. They're both trading really low right now, and will do well if the economy tanks again, which is seems like it will.

Energy/Oil
I recently picked up some Magellan Midstream Partners (MMP) stock. They own a large amount of the pipeline infrastructure in the USA, and just signed a deal with a Canadian company in a joint venture. This is a pretty risky segment right now, but with the prices being so low, I think it is a good time to buy and hold for the long term investor, like myself.

Tobacco and Oil and gas energy sectors probably wouldn't be first on my list, but I've got to admit. Since my divorce I pulled everything out of the market and haven't went back yet so I haven't been paying too much attention.

I'm in it for the long haul. Tobacco has been steady.

I have been doing a lot of stock shorting. Its especially beneficial with how the market it is right now. I'm buying Chipotle stock as well since they are around $200 below normal due to their food poisoning scandal. Chipotle has some die hard fans so they are still busy and will recover back to around $700 when they do.

The tobacco stocks are rising due to the new vapor fad that is all the rage among smokers. The problem I see with this trend is the fact that they pretty much have to lose tobacco users to increase their vapor users. It's a positive by way of a negative. The only way it can really become a positive is if the margin is higher on vapor products, but even as a whole. I still expect the nicotine users to steadily decrease as it has been for the last ten years. It's still poison and still expensive. Their overall market (tobacco and vapor users) isn't likely to increase with new users in greater numbers than the decrease in current users.

You can ride the investor herd movement on vapor now, but caveat emptor.

As of last week I hold 1000 shares of AAL I purchased prior to merger @ $2.30. Needless to say, this was a gamble that's paid off big.
I've also gone long on 2 energy stocks:
COP & ESV
All these are @ Scottrade that I manage.

Also have various positions in a professionally managed portfolio that generate a steady monthly income.

Just to bump this. How have your investments been doing? My RAI and MMP are booming. I picked up some Target stock a few weeks back when it bottomed out. Kind of nervous about it, though.

you don't just have to buy gold but you can invest in companies that mine gold like ABX or NEM

The Gold plays have all worked out. I still have several junior miners but got out of some, regrettably.

The overall market has been artificially propped up for several years now with all the funny money printing (trillions).
I'm certain the market will get absolutely devastated at some point but the upward run could last awhile longer. I'm not about to predict a top with all of the manipulation.
Best to ride the wave.

Besides the gold plays, I like biotechs--especially after the big dip in the Q1--for the long haul.

Happy investing.

I like solid companies that pay a dividend, which I reinvest in more stock:

-AT&T
-Cisco
-Comcast
-Intel
-PepsiCo
-Pfizer
-Valero Energy
-Wells Fargo

Just a guess but has Wells Fargo been the most stable/productive there from your list?

Honestly, I don't really look for trends over such a short period of time. I filter down my stocks using this method:

1. Do they pay dividends?
2. What do their financials look like? Not really an expert here, but look for any red flags in that regard.
3. Are they undervalued?

For example, Target boosted their dividend payout to 3.5%. Their financials look OK, and I feel that the whole transgender bathroom thing artificially lowered their price. It is all kind of subjective, but I am looking for long term investments where I can reinvest the dividends and watch it grow.

I'm less into investing in individual stocks, and more into buying shares of various funds.
