The 2016 NFL Draft is drawing closer, and that means a few NFL franchises are about to bring in a quarterback with a first-round pick. Carson Wentz, Jared Goff and Paxton Lynch are widely-considered the three quarterbacks who might go on the first day.

What does that mean? Well, it could mean anything.

A total of 42 quarterbacks have been selected in the first round since 2000, and the results have varied. A team might wind up with a bust like JaMarcus Russell (first overall) or a two-time MVP like Aaron Rodgers (No. 24 overall).

The rest is a mix of good, bad and ugly. Here’s a look at all 42 first-round quarterbacks since 2000, ranked from first to worst...

But at the same time the majority of the top 10 and top 20 QBs in the league are on that list and you have to get into the 20s before you get into the listing of QBs that are busts. Sorta reenforces the idea that if you want a QB you're probably best off shopping in round 1, but its also a coin flip that the player is going to bust.

Better percentage tha defensive backs, I would say. We are 0-4 on 1st round CBs

Harrington looks like he's having one hell of a bowel movement in that picture.

One of the very few fa I wish we would have resigned. But he was a whipping boy for a lot of folks around here.

Newman played well for us, as did Mike Jenkins for a few years.

Byron Jones showed promise last season.

Mo has been the one big disappointment but that's honestly because of where he was drafted and what was given up to get him. Had he been drafted in the late 1st round, I don't think he'd be viewed in as much of a negative light as he is.

Joey Harrington top 30? Alex smith top 10? There are enough wanted picks to strengthen my confidence that none of these Qb's will be stars and to stay away. Too risky.

I'm liking Elliot more and more. He may be passing Ramsey If we stay at 4. Evaluating Qb's is very hard. Many of the stars now were top picks. Many of the very best were badly underrated and misevaluated.

Rogers, Brady, Romo. My top 3 in the league.

You're not gonna find a future QB if you don't even try, Romo was pure luck lightning won't strike twice, so while the bust % is high you have almost 0 shot at a franchise QB if you don't draft one

Exactly. Apparently some people want to try to ignore history, and the five plus years that this franchise spun its' wheels in futility trying to cheat the system to find a quarterback.

The glorious days of Carter, Hutchinson, and Henson and whatever baseball failures we could find. A brilliant Jerry Jones idea where he thought if he could just find a strong arm, the rest would just fall into place.

Who knows how long that exercise in futility would have lasted if not for Sean Payton bringing Tony Romo to town?

But I can't believe that some want to run the risk of going back to it.

Stash I can almost guarantee that if we go qb at #4 and he busts while Ramsey and Elliot and others to to probowls you will be cursing jerry Jones and the cowboys. None of these guys are safe enough imo to waste a #4 on. In a trade back scenario sure

The proverbial kick the can down the road mentality. It's hard to pick the right QB so let's pick another player instead. Then eventually, one day, you wake up and say, "Holy @#$%, I don't have a QB!"

So just pick one even if he won't improve your team and is not that good?

Any player can bust, and any miss would be lamentable. Therefore, any such claim applies to all players and any such point is moot. I could say the reverse as well. What if either of the top two quarterbacks become this league's next Aaron Rodgers and Andrew Luck and we have to deal with the fact that we passed on either of them when we had the chance?

Or lament the fact that after Romo is gone, we become one of the league's quarterback have not's like we were before? Were you around for the back-to-back-to-back 5-11 seasons? I was. And it wasn't pretty. And I have no desire to ever go back there again.

You're not getting either of them in any "trade back scenario", so it's not worth bringing it up. You either like either of them and want a quarterback, or you don't.

And how is it a "waste" to ever get your quarterback of the future? It would be a far bigger "waste" to draft another Greg Ellis at #4 overall. Or to overdraft a safety at #4 overall. Or to draft a damaged-goods linebacker. Or to overpay a running back when you could have gotten a top one in free agency for less money and no draft pick!

If you want to talk about "waste", look no further.

Yeah, let's overpay for a running back we could have gotten cheaper in free agency and give up the #4 overall pick in the process. Asinine.

Well obviously you don't pick any player that you don't like or think can develop into a good player for you.

But not drafting a QB at 4 because they bust too much even if you think Wentz and/or Goff have franchise potential would be moronic.

Yeah, not exactly. It's hard AND the team doesn't need one right now, so the added value, especially at the salary you have to pay the #4 pick is ZERO. Future value, which is weighted far less than current value is risky.
