IRVING, Texas -- As the Dallas Cowboys coach, Jason Garrett has built his entire philosophy on acquiring a roster full of the right kind of guys.

Ironically, Garrett finds his team compromised by the right kind of guys doing the wrong thing.

Again.

It's a troubling trend for Garrett, who started last season without starters Rolando McClain and Greg Hardy because of off-the-field issues. McClain, a middle linebacker, was suspended for the first four games of last season for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy, while Hardy, a defensive end, missed the first four games for violating the league’s personal conduct policy.

Now, there’s a chance Garrett will start the 2016 season without two starters. Defensive end Randy Gregory will miss the first four games for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy, and defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence is facing a four-game suspension after testing positive for amphetamines, according to a source.

That's three players, maybe four, in two seasons who will miss a quarter of the season. That’s way too much.

The problem? The players on this roster don’t fear Garrett.

Finally agree with JJT for once...........

I really hope he doesn't overreact and start drafting guys like Caleb McSurdy again.

Even when Jerry Jones refused to remove Larry Allen from the roster, while adding Terrell Owens -- two players Parcells didn’t want -- the players always knew Parcells remained in complete control of the team.

It’s impossible to feel that way with Garrett, at times, because you never know just how much power he actually wields.

Coach Parcells still was able to prove his point in other ways, like putting Allen in the PUP and having him working out on the side with a medicine ball.

That was an icon on the roster. There is also the tape on the helmet for Woodson etc.

He did show he was "in charge" about as much as a head coach can when the Owner has an open door policy and is a world class enabler.

And I disagree with Taylor.

I think it is very clear what level of power Garrett wields. As far as his input on "group" decisions will go.

Totally agree. Garrett is hardly a factor on Draft Day especially when he is too busy giggling and playing footsies with Jerry's daughter. I can't wait to watch Jason on the Draft Cam.

So the coach's authority is undermined at Valley Ranch? Whoa! stop the presses! Frenchie has a scoop...

I think it is pretty much a joke now days to think any player is afraid or fearful of a coach any where in the NFL. Even BP had little control over what LT did, hell most training camps LT was a hold out then come on in right before the season and BP did nothing. What you gonna cut them so what their are 31 other teams out there. RGIII got in the dog house and his punishment is he was shipped out and still in the NFL and still collecting a pay check.

8 players suspended in the past 2 seasons (2nd only to the Skins) ....RKG!

The two best coaches in franchise history, Jimmy Johnson and Bill Parcells, each found the right mix between creating an atmosphere of fear and one of winning because players knew the coach had power. Sure, those coaches had players who committed off-the-field transgressions, but they always knew Johnson and Parcells were in complete control.

Jason Garrett is a Wimp,whats the use of his RKG mantra if his rookies dont practice it?.

You can't blame Jason for hardy and Gregory.

The problem is they let him have input on game-days. JJ put an end to that after trying that disaster for 3 seasons for the most part by stripping him of play calling duties via Linehan. Now we have his dated passing scheme but have gone run heavy.

You would think some modification could be made for backup QBs, but we forget we have a highly paid spokesperson instead of a HC with the innovation to help any QB not named Tony Romo to this point. Could he tell Linehan to "update" some of the scheme for the newbies, or is that even a JJ move. There is no organization in this this...I don't know what to call our "way".

Sorry with todays players I don't think any have this so called fear of the HC. Player movement is so great that if things do not work out one place someone will pick you up. This is no high school or even college and certainly not the 1970's. Garrett looking for the RKG is not really any different than 31 other teams, coaches want guys who want to work hard, self motivating, love the game and strive to become better even when they are on top of their game. Cowboys will take a chance on a player but then so do the other teams including the Pats with Belicheck sometimes those 2nd chances work out and sometimes they don't. When it comes to Garrett people will hang on any comment he makes to slam him but much of what Jason is looking for in players is what all coaches are looking for, it is not like Jason invented the process of finding the right kinds of guys

Randle and Hardy are gone. Hardy was a gamble that they structured right but that didn't pay off. I agree that if he was so much of a problem they should have cut him anytime after the CAR game, but doing it then or a month later really makes no difference to anybody. It's not lost on his teammates that Hardy's gone and a persona non-grata.

Lawrence, I'm still waiting to see what his issue was, but it sounds like it was related to his surgery, which isn't something being afraid of Jason Garrett is going to fix. The same goes for Scandrick's slip up last season.

McClain, I've said before I don't understand how they rationalize that he belongs on the roster, but they seem really pleased with his effort last season. I don't get it, though, and he's not reliable.

Gregory, I don't know what the story is. I think his is medical-related--if that's the case, again it's not really something that a coach's intimidation is going to fix. But it's at the point where he cuts himself in my book with his next offense, and I'd drop him in camp if anybody makes the decision close for me.

Oh, and let me include the obligatory 'JJT is a mouth breather and a tool' comment. Not because of this article in particular, but because he just is.
