Woot! Not only will it be on CBS All-Access, they are also going to show it on Netflix!

The first episode of Star Trek premiered 50 years ago, and the beloved sci-fi series is now scheduled to return to television in 2017 with a new show on Netflix and CBS — or more specifically, on CBS All Access, the Network’s digital subscription video on demand and live-streaming service.

The network revealed the first teaser for the series in early 2016 along with previews of several other new, upcoming programs, and the brief peek at Star Trek has already generated quite a bit of speculation. With a new movie (Star Trek Beyond) hitting theaters this year, many fans are wondering exactly how the upcoming series will fit into the framework of the Star Trek universe as it exists now.

I don't know if I like the idea of having a new a crew each season, if that turns out to be true. But I like that it won't be connected to the new movies (even though I've enjoyed them).

I understood it as all 13 episodes are connected on one storyline rather than separate ones. Not that the crew would be different in other seasons.

I understand that, what I didn't like is this part:

I would hate for it to jump around in the different time periods. I haven't watched American Horror Story, but isn't it basically a different mini-series each season? With the characters and time changing?

According to series showrunner and co-creator Bryan Fuller (via Collider), the first season of the series will unfold over 13 episodes, telling one complete story over the course of the season instead of a new, self-contained story each episode.

This is what it says. Instead of many single storyline episodes, it will be more like a mini-series. All 13 episodes will be a part of the same storyline. (a 13 hour movie)

Then it says.

Nothing has been confirmed at this point about the chronological setting for the series, but rumors have suggested that the series will be an anthology project of some sort, akin to American Horror Story or Fargo, with each season set in a different point in the Star Trek timeline and featuring different characters and cast members. One particular, unofficial report indicates that the first season of the series will be set in the time between 1991’s Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country

This is just rumors, but it does suggest that each season could be a different cast/crew/ship/time for each season. Though, it's unconfirmed and I find this highly unlikely as it would run a high risk of failed season which most likely fail the entire series. Casting is a pain staking process and doing a new cast each season would mean the quality of each season would probably end up subpar. I would seriously frown upon this if that is their plan.

Finally, the first season is only 13 episodes. I hate that. I like the normal of around 24 episode seasons. Binge watching 13 season is easy, binge watching 24 is more long term and fun. (I can rip through an entire 24 episode season in 2-3 weeks. If I binge on the weekends if I'm alone, I can do it in a week.

Yeah that's why I was a little worried. And agreed just rumors. I like the idea of it being the time between Kirk and Picard though. Although a time after Voyager and the borg being defeated could be interesting as well.

If it were fan sourced material that had high production sheen on it, I would be more hopeful. Not 100% sure how I will like it, I mean I am in a minority that I hated the re-vamp,re-boot, re-imagining,re-constituted,re-whatever of Battlestar, it started out so so promising and kinda just fell in the toilet.

How come the federation never incorporated the Romulan cloaking technology? Was it against their ethical code. I recall voyager using it once though.

Netflix isn't for U.S./Canadian audiences though.

...episodes will be available exclusively on CBS All Access (which requires a monthly subscription) for audiences in Canada and the U.S. In addition, the series will be available on Netflix for international audiences in 188 other countries. Netflix will reportedly get each episode within 24 hours of its premiere on CBS All Access.

I think Voyager might have used cloaking technology they discovered in the Delta Quadrant, not Romulan tech. I may be wrong though. I do know for certain that the Romulans allowed the Federation to outfit the USS Defiant with their cloaking device to help combat the Dominion threat from the Gamma Quadrant. Ben Sisko could sweet talk just about anybody.

Yes, the Federation treaty disallowed any cloaking technology by the Federation. (not just Romulan cloaking technology)

The Federation had a cloaking device on the Pegasus, which William Riker I believe was an ensign on. Later in a TNG episode, they find it stuck in an asteroid, and retrieve it without Picard knowing why they are there initially, with its original Captain(Pegasus) on board the Enterprise.

It wasn't just a cloaking device. It was a phase shifting cloaking device that would allow it to pass through matter. It was well beyond anything the Romulan's had.
