Send Ron Leary + 2017 3rd round pick to Seattle for Michael Bennett

The Cowboys planned to be without Randy Gregory for four games, but now that will be at least 10, and possibly 14, after he has failed an additional drug test(s). Gregory may return this season, but knowing his history it would be insane for the Cowboys to treat his presence, in 2016 or beyond, as anything other than a bonus. The club needs a starting defensive end.

The best free agent on the market is Dwight Freeney, but at 36, Freeney is a situational rusher, though one that would still make a ton of sense. If Dallas wants more, they should make inquiries as to the availability of Seattle’s Michael Bennett.

Bennett is unhappy with his current contract which he signed two years ago. The deal pays him a little over $7 million a year over four seasons, and ranks him 10th among 4-3 DE and 20th among edge rushers in the league. Bennett led all DEs in pass rush productivity in 2015 (combined sacks, QB hits, QB pressures) though, and is well-regarded as having one of the best skillsets for the position.

Not only would the Cowboys have to give up collateral for Bennett, but he would obviously require a new deal. Already at age 30, it would be difficult to see Dallas giving Bennett anything beyond a three-year deal (adding one to his current two years remaining) if they did acquire him. Would Dallas be willing to give up assets and still give a three-year $33 million deal?

If so, Seattle has a dire need for offensive linemen as they have one of the worst units in the league. Dallas could offer their disgruntled lineman Ron Leary, and the inclusion of a third-round pick might entice the Seahawks to make the move...

To be sure, this team needs to develop its youngsters just about as desperately as it needs to fortify its DL. I'd prefer to keep Leary and be assured of having a capable backup at OG if and when an injury occurs.

We have several youngsters in house that I believe offer legitimate potential at DT to get the job done. Honestly, Freeney appeals to me more than Bennett, anyhow. Be that as it may, if the Dallas brass elected to make a deal for Bennett, I suppose I could live with that as well but not for 7 million bucks -- that's just too much.

I'm betting the Dallas brass won't feel any differently, what with their newfound cap-spending policies in effect. I like Leary as a backup, though, let's make no mistake. My first option would be to keep him in tow. I believe there's a good chance he'll fill in for someone on our OL before the year is over. Realistically, I'd say there's about a one in ten chance that we might outbid the other teams that are considering Bennett anyway but we'll see.

Secondly, if they would take this deal, I'd make it in a heartbeat. Bennett is one of the best 'disrupters' in the entire NFL. He wreaks havoc in multiple ways, from multiple positions, and his impact on the game is worth a 3-year, $30 million contract.

He's vastly underpaid for what he brings to the table in my opinion, and I'd be upset with that contract too, especially after seeing what Olivier Vernon is getting!

While he's a bit if a screwball like his brother, he gets the job done on the field. But if I can work out a deal, I'd do it and not think twice.
