This should have been in @Trouty 's I like beer a lot thread.

Romo could fetch a 3rd round pick, conditional 2 at best as a 37 year old next year.

Romo isn't going anywhere for a bag of chips. If we move him, it will be for premium compensation. If not he will be the starter when he returns, most likely. So having said that if he was trades this year, (probably only to Denver as that is one of the few teams it makes sense to trade for) or maybe the Jets (they won't make the super bowl this yerar with or without him, but Ryan may trade for him to fix the problem for next year) you would probably net three very late number 1's from denver or possibly two number ones from the Jets.

You would lose the security of Romo being here. Some of you are dismissive of this, but Dak's track record isn't long. You risk teams figuring him out and slowing his roll considerably, which is a substantial risk. It is easy if you say it really fast, but that doesn't change the fact it is a real factor. You are trading your starter. Let that sink in. Jerry takes a lot of risk in making that trade, so he isn't going to just give up Romo and be a laughingstock. He will get enough compensation to do the deal so that even if Prescott fails after the trade he can reasonably say, it was a trade that was worth the risk he took, and for most reasonable minds to agree with that statement.

Having said that, on the other side of the balance sheet it would mean cheap QB play for a couple of years. Not forever. I think Dak is on only a 3 year deak. We will get one more cheap year out of him and then he will cost as much or more than Romo does now. The cap savings matter, but not as much as the draft picks would.

With the three late round #1's you could probably get a late round defensive end to bolster the defense, or a replacement for Mo, if we don't want to pay Mo, which would save a ton of money, a linebacker to add to Lee and hopefully Jaylon. Or you could pay Mo (I would if I could get it reasonably done) draft that DE, draft a linebacker with our own #1 pick, and be in pretty good shape on the defense going forward.

Or for you trade Dez junkies, you could draft defense with the acquired #1 pick, and draft a receiver with our first round pick (or vice versa) and go young all the way with our new triplets and trade Dez for a #1. Rinse and repeat that process for two more years.

With the Jets, you are getting a top 10 pick this year, most likely. and a later round pick after that.
Are you referring to Rex Ryan, The guy who coaches the Bills??

In response to the prior posters who think I am delusional, and those who think I am delusional for offering the foregoing, here is my response. You guys have absolutely no idea what a top tier NFL QB will command in terms of salary cap. Romo is a top 5 QB in this league when healthy. That is why even though Dak is winning, he will, in all likelihood be replaced. A top 5 QB will get $20 million per year, IF and I do mean IF you already have one. They don't come available very often. Romo would be an anomaly in the NFL landscape.

No one thought anything of Sam Bradford (actually I did) and he netted a 1st and a 4th that can become a 2nd. Chew on that a little bit and see how it tastes. Romo has a much better resume than Bradford does. Romo will not be cheaply traded away, if the Cowboys have any ******* clue what they are doing. If we actually trade him, I am telling you that if he doesn't net a first I would be more than shocked. Getting a top 5 pick from a team is probably worth more on the trade chart than 3 late round picks.

The Broncos are watching the Vikings win, because they had the balls to trade for Sam Bradford. Say what you want but the Vikings defense is not nearly as good as the Broncos defense is. While it may only make sense to the Broncos to pull the trigger, it is worth a lot to them. Elway has the balls to do that deal. He won a SB with the Peyton Manning risk. If the Broncos think Simian can get it done, then great, But I highly doubt that Lynch will get them where they want to be in the next three years.

Keep in mind that the Vikings traded for Bradford having a guy that they like in Teddy Bridgewater. Teddy may be back next year, or maybe not, but the Vikings didn't wait to see. They pulled the trigger on a less QB than Romo.

Waste of bandwidth. The Cowboys are not interested in trading Romo.

I am sure that many of you face palmers are some of the same people putting up a ace palm icon when some suggested that an undrafted Tony Romo could be a franchise QB as well. How many of you thought Dak would be one point from being undefeated? Not too many. Discussing possibilities is what this board is about. Hindsight is 20/20.

This thread is ill-conceived.

Well Stash, everyone is entitled to their opinion. Maybe you are right. Then again, neither of us have a crystal ball. If someone told you that the Vikings would give up what they gave up to get Sam Bradford, I doubt you would have seen that one coming. Personally, I thought it was a good trade for the Vikings. Everyone sees things differently. We are all wrong part of the time. The strength of a person's point of view is not necessarily an indicator that they are right.

We can't afford to trade anybody except McFadden/Dunbar, everybody of note is needed just in case this turns into a Super Bowl run,,, trade a draft pick for pass rush help maybe.

That is obviously not really the point of this thread, but that doesn't mean it isn't a valid school of thought. I can see the merit of holding on to every piece we currently have and trying to make the best case for winning it all this year. A trade which gives up current pieces doesn't help us win this year, but it might increase our chances of winning it all in subsequent years. On the other hand if you give up a piece this year (which would have been insurance only) probably doesn't decrease our chance of winning it this year too, barring injury of course. It is all a matter of risk, and hindsight is 20/20.

I do agree that McFadden or Dunbar looks like a piece that could be moved. No one really knows how McFadden is viewed by the Cowboys organization, or what the pecking order is regarding him vs. the remainder of the running backs outside of Elliott is, or how much difference they think separates the various backs.

If youre trading romo, the only substantial thing youre getting is cap relief. Forget about getting some useful asset back.

This team has high hopes this season after this impressive start; we aren't trading anyone for anything.

If a team was crazy enough to offer a first round pick for Romo, I would turn it down. Next week, DAK is injured, and where are you for the remainder of this once promising season? Showers and Sanchez?

Nope, we hope we've finally fixed the backup QB position on a team that is strong everywhere else on offense; it would be foolish to trade part of that away before seeing Sanchez in this offense over the off-season. At this point, there's no guarantee he can even be an adequate backup yet.

The only right now trade we need is to get a playmaker/defense to help Romo win that super bowl.

Thank you, Dak. You ARE the future. But we are still in last chapter of Tony Romo story.
Get him all the help you can. It worked for Elway twice.
I just need it to happen once.

This place can argue over if a dog likes dog biscuits.....then you will have the tangent arguments....what determines a dog biscuit as well what determines a dog is a dog. And then there will be the people asking if a hot dog is a dog. And those then would say, is a hot hog better with mustard or relish. And then some would want to trade an aging hot dog for sausage.
Oh well......
If you were a hot dog and you were starving to death would you eat your self?

THREE #1's ???- You Sir are cray cray.

If Denver offered even one first rounder and you could work around the cap hit, you'd do it fast. No team is crazy or desperate enough to offer 2 or 3 first rounders for an old injury prone QB no matter how talented.
Exactly the team shouldn't even consider it unless 5 #1's are on the table.

LOL.

The compensation for Romo would be small. He's a QB on the last legs of his career and carries a big contract.

Three #1 picks for Romo might be the craziest thing ever uttered on this board in its entire existence.

Carson Palmer?

Carson Palmer?

Palmer netted a first round pick and 2nd rounder when he was traded at age 31.

Three years later, at age 33 or 34, he was traded for a 6th round pick and a conditional pick.

So no, Romo is not getting multiple first round picks in return.
