Quarterbacks draw first-round picks, even for one year. Bradford drew a first. Romo might be worth a first, second, and third if the bidding involved multiple teams.

But I tend to think he might end up starting again here. Dak's still in training in so many ways. Romo can teach him so much more, especially by playing. We've got Dak for 12-15 years, so there's nothing to worry about.

You are in denial. Romo will NEVER be the starter again here. This is Dak's team now.. and thank goodness. I wish Romo well in his future.. best team he could land on would be Denver because he will need a defense like that to carry him.

It'll be interesting to see how Dak does against the (1) the Baltimore defense, then (2) the second go-round in the division. He didn't play particularly well against Philly or New York, and Cousins handed us a win in Washington that we shouldn't have.

If this thing flutters down the stretch, discussions will be had. Do you want to face Atlanta, Philly, or the Giants without your best QB? Then Seattle next if you get that far?

Dak has some growing to do between now and the playoffs. Let's see what happens.

It really is absolutely fascinating when you step back and think about it.
I think the front office made a long-term decision. Certainly, they hope Prescott can handle the rest of the season as well as he has during the first portion but I think they will ride out the gamble... unless-and-if he struggles mightly in a playoff game. In short, I think the front office is willing to gamble securing the highest playoff seed possible or getting into the playoffs period. I will not be surprised if they have accepted the remote chance of the team stumbling or crashing and burning down the stretch. I believe their mindset would only change during the playoffs. My take.

I think he stays next year as backup.

What are the cap ramifications/scenarios of he stays vs traded or June 1st-ed?

I wouldn't trade him to any decent NFC team and wouldn't trade him period for less than a high second Maybe even only for a first. We know all to well how bad a season can go if we lose our starter.

Not sure if he stays or not but IF I were Jacksonville I would definitely call the Cowboys.

My fear, realistic or not, is that we will fall short with Dak and Romo will go on to find his Super Bowl success with a team with a better defense such as two that have been mentioned here, Denver and Arizona. Then, we'll all be crying about what could have been, especially if Dak doesn't prove to be the long-term answer.

My hope is that Prescott will prove that fear to be totally unfounded. So far, he's done that. That doesn't mean it will hold up, but he's given the team and fans no reason to believe it can't succeed with him so far.
I hear you. I think we can all agree, or most of us, that Dak is the real deal. You don't do what he's been doing over the past 10 weeks and not be for real. He is our future at the position and considering the circumstances that took place (Romo going down), I think the future should continue. I'm not concerned about Romo winning somewhere else, would be happy for him like I was for Ware. I didn't think it was meant to be for Ware to win the ultimate football prize in Dallas and something tells me the same might be true for Romo.

Dak is most certainly the starter but we will need Tony at some point this season. Glad to see him being such a stand up guy.

Excellent post. I noticed that myself and I grew annoyed with the coverage that seemed to be hoping to catch Romo in a negative moment. The dude's just not going to be hating on Dak and that's that. I wish the media would just quit showing Romo every time Dak makes a great play or a bad one. I watch the game for the game, not for a soap opera they're trying to conjure up.

This and sticking a mic JJ face immediately after each game. it's as if they wanted to create a QB controversy. But that is the price for being the QB of the Cowboys I guess.

I thought that too however, I think he'll get traded mid season next year by a competitive team who either loses their starter to injury or that just needs a veteran QB to make a playoff run next year. It will be interesting.

.

The greatest QB of all time Tom Brady wouldn't get a 1st round pick. What makes you think Romo would get one? Bradford got one because he is significantly younger than Romo and was a 1st overall pick.

I interpreted his message yesterday in that he believes he's in his best shape, mind and body, and his desire to play and compete is at an all time high. That says to me if he's not starting here then it will be somewhere else. I don't think Romo has any desire to be a long-term back-up and I believe he'll do what's necessary to make himself as trade-able as possible
Nothing to disagree with here...

If that happened, it could end up being eerily similar to when the Cowboys traded Craig Morton to the Broncos and then met in the Super Bowl.

Except if it happened now, Denver would be the team with the doomsday defense

Every game, it's the same.

Dak makes a play, quick, show Romo! Dak hits Dez for a touchdown, immediately, find Tony! Find a crack in the veneer, somehow, as if he's going to cuss out Garrett or throw clipboards at ballboys or something. There he is with a wry smile in sideline apparel, happy as hell for his understudy, but with mixed emotions no doubt. It really doesn't take the imagination that the media seems to think we don't have.

Such is the ugly side of an irrelevant media that's far more interested in who's standing for the national anthem then they are about who's winning the game. The media's fatal character flaws have reduced them to social media's little *****.

Romo is fully aware of these camera shots, and he also knows it's about to change for the worse. Now, when Dak throws an errant pass, or God forbid, an interception, the camera will pan his way again for a reaction. Only this time, he'll have a uniform on. This time, he can go in the game if called on. The analysts will pee themselves with glee.

Tony Romo is now the highest-paid and only elite backup quarterback in the NFL.

The media will want to feed us this narrative until we puke. Tear this team asunder one way or the other, anyway possible, for the sake of heightened, manufactured drama. That's the media's thing, to make news out of thin air, or at least exaggerate it beyond it's reality for effect.

That's why Romo stood at that podium that yesterday. It was soley for Dak Prescott.

Romo direly wants to play for the best offensive unit in the NFL. But that doesn't trump his respect and admiration for the new kid, who's done nothing but listened and respected Romo's guidance to now. Tony fears he'll be a weight hanging over Dak's shoulder on every throw, and he doesn't want the job back that way.

Sure, he could be aloof and distant, and leave Dak to his own rookie misgivings, but instead, he mentors the rookie tirelessly because Dak accepts it graciously. Romo wants it that way, even though Bledsoe didn't do the same for him. Farve didn't do it for Rodgers. Montana didn't do it for Young. You rarely see a transition with this much grace.

Tony Romo isn't finished. Whether circumstances reinstate him as the starting QB here, or he's taking a talented Denver or Arizona team into the playoffs next year, Romo has a LOT of good football left in him. I firmly believe that. Guys can finally heal. Look at Sean Lee.

Of all things Romo will be remembered for in Dallas - the spin-o-ramas and miracles with embarrassing rosters of misfit toys he's been dealt - that gesture yesterday for his young successor will be among his finest moments. At least among the less embarrassing side of our ridiculous fan base.

Tony Romo is a dude. A good dude.

Thank you for doing this. I wanted to do something similar but you expressed it much more eloquently and more sensitively than I could have done. Excellent post erod!!

I am a big Dak fan, but I have noticed that is he really lucky, thru the 9 games he has had luck on his side, so I wonder how it goes
when he doesnt have the good luck?
I know when giants went on their runs, manning was very lucky, and the team was too.
Sometimes luck plays a big part in wins. whether it is bad or good.

I have also seen some really lame passes, mixed in with the really good ones.
There have been a few times where he had nothing on the ball and it has fell way short.

So while I like dak and the winning and want to see it play out, I have seen some flaws that make me think, he could be a 1 season
wonder.
I really dont know, so I would keep tony around till I was sure.
I think the jones boys are sure hence the tony speech, but we still have to see how this plays out.

I know Dak seems to be really good late in the 4th, like he is just waiting for that, then he plays for real, or just gets lucky
I dont know.

Erod. I just love your writing. Its like poetry. This one though left me with a bitter sweet feeling of emotion. Romo is a good dude. I will weep when he decides to leave Dallas for another team.

no way are we paying 24 million for a backup next season. He will either be traded or released June 1st.

Thats assuming that Dak doesnt struggle and Tony doesn't get a crack to start again here.

Romo will not be the source of any controversy. He never has been in reality. However, the media will go into overdrive (moreso then the haphazard Romo/Prescott melodrama nonsense ever was) if Romo tells the team he wants to play elsewhere.

You could be right but I think only an injury will retain Romo on the roster. That would be dreadful irony in my opinion.
I believe any talk between Romo and Jerry regarding a trade to a contender will be done completely behind the scenes. We won't hear about it until it happens, IMO. Romo has always been the type of man to handle his business in a mature and rational manner, never more evident than when he went into JJ's office as a relative youngster (no agent present) to talk about a new contract. The story goes, as I recall, that Tony Told Jerry: "The reason I want you to pay me is that then you'll have to play me. You crunch your numbers and I'll talk to my guy (agent) and let's get this done" (or words to that effect). Tony left the office and Bill Parcells (who was also present) turned to Jerry and said "I think we just found our QB". The rest is history, so to speak. I can absolutely see Tony redoing his contract in an effort to make a trade more amenable. Time will tell.
