What Constitutes A Successful Season?

Yep.

That's why your whole level of success definition is even more meaningless... because it's a game.

Hey if some of you want to boo-hoo if the Cowboys don't win the SB this season so be it.

I and several others will not be joining you.
Could you be any more dramatic? If the season doesnt end in a super bowl it doesnt mean we're going to huddle up and "boo hoo" about it, it just means we'll be disappointed with the end result..those of us with super bowl expectations.

To my way of thinking, if we didn't win another game, it would already be a successful season. Sure, it would be nice to win playoff games and a championship if we were so lucky but, honestly, we have found a future QB, we have gotten back on the right track as a franchise and we are in good shape to compete for championships for the next 10 years.

Our future has not been so bright in 25 years. If this is all we accomplish, thats a lot.
I generally agree ABQ, but what about this scenario:
We lose first round of playoffs. In future years Dak declines and becomes more of a fools gold than a franchise QB like we thought. We also dont win more than 8 or 9 games a year for the next 10 years with no playoff success.

Thats why I dont think you can instantly call this year a success if we lose early on in playoffs. We would need to let the future play out first to make sure 2016 wasnt fools gold.

Some obviously can't appreciate the process which is unfortunate for them.

And that's how people and franchises fail. They think success should be an immediate function so they heavily invest in free agency (Commanders) and look for the quick fix instead of building steadily through the draft or developing a plan and sticking with it.

How successful fans ultimately view this season may depend a lot on the next few seasons. I know that for me the 2007 season felt a lot more successful at the time than it did years later.

What do they say about hindsight? ;)

We've gone this far. A Super Bowl win will make it a success, anything less will make it a good season.

I agree. There are different degrees of success and much of it has to do with where you are to start with. Next season if Cleveland goes 8-8 or 9-7 given where they have been over the last several years that is a big improvement and few would look at is as a failure of a season.

As for the Cowboys I think this season has been very successful, no one gave this group a snowballs chance in hell of doing what they have done thus far and being a young team it gives many of us hope for the future.

Of course if Cowboys lose in post season or even the SB I will not be happy that they lost it would hurt a lot to get to this point and not see them finish what they started, but I will not lose the optimism of this team’s future. Win or lose there is a lot to be encouraged about.
Right. I think many posters are misinterpreting the perception of this being a successful season with not being disappointed if we should fall short. It's not the same.
Of course, we will be disappointed of we get bounced short of the Super Bowl or even if we lose the Super Bowl. But based on where we've come from and where we think we're headed, this is a successful season.

Well, Dak could decline either way. Truth is we really don't know what will happen but gotta be honest, I feel pretty good about Dak and this team in future. What you say could happen but heck, anything could happen really so yeah, I still pretty good about things.

Ask Tony Romo if 2007, 2009, and 2014 was a success. We had the best record in the league two of those years and fell short of the ultimate goal

We didnt sneak in to the playoffs people. We were dominant during the regular season. Losing in the first playoff game will be a major disappointment for this team and franchise.

It's always changing, had you told me in preseason we be sitting at 13-2 going inn to week 17 I'd take it regardless of playoff showing but now that we're here anything short of a good showing in the nfcc game would be disappointing.

this season has been a great season so far to me. I would like one playoff win. one and done would be a huge disappointment.

Any time you get the number one seed, you have to at least make it to the NFCCG for it not to be considered a choke job. I am sorry, but if you are the number one seed and cant win a single playoff game at home, that is a choke.........see 2007 Cowboys.

I don't think this team chokes, I think we at least win that first playoff game and then host the NFCCG........if we lose, we lose, but at least make it there!!!

We've clinched HFA. Dak and Zeke have bright futures. With that said, there are no guarantees. It's possible ( Knock on wood it doesn't happen) we get beat in the firSt playoff game. It's possible we win the SB.

What constitutes success for you as a fan? Make it to the NFCCG at minimum? SB? Already a success? No matter what happens, do you foresee us being an elite team going forward?

The bar is always moving.

In one sense it's already a success. If we play sloppily in the playoffs it will certainly take the sheen off.

Expectations are higher now.

Expectations change once more information is gathered. Especially in sports. Especially in the NFL when what happened to Dallas this year happens all the time for different teams each season.

In the NFL you have to strike while the iron is hot.

The Patriots and whatever team Payton Manning is on have been the only real consistencies.

We can't expect Dallas to be good next year or have the opportunity they have right now just because we should be better next year in theory.. The NFL doesn't work like that.

The time is NOW.

Exactly....................nothing is guaranteed, we might be 6-10 next year with Dak and Zeke both hitting the "sophomore slump".

To put this in perspective, consider that Dan Marino went to the SB in his second season and never returned.
