I am not hell bent for him or against him, but it wouldn't be real hard to upgrade his position.

What will he bring on the open market? I think his replacement could easily be obtained and save cap room in the process.

At what price would you keep him on the team? I think Jeff Heath can do his job for a fraction of the cost.

Basically agree. Church is average and an upgrade would be helpfull. Heath is a great rotational guy.

I think Church is underrated. He's a guy who knows the defense inside and out, is a willing and capable tackler, and has been very dependable. The defense was way worse when he got hurt and got way better when he came back this year. He probably isn't going to be a guy who has a lot of years left, but I'd love to have him back for a couple years.

Wilcox by the way, is the opposite of everything Church is and I would love to move on from him.

How was the defense way worse?

I'd rather keep Church and let Heath have a shot at Wilcox' spot. Move Frazier into Heath's hybrid ST/S role, and backfill in the draft.

Church is a limited player, but he's good at what he does if you can protect him properly. And he's a leader on defense. Plus, with potential turnover with Wilcox, Mo, and Carr, I'd prefer to limit the churn in the secondary a bit. I'd also keep Carr (if he can be kept at a reasonable price) and let Mo and Wilcox walk.

I'd trade church and Wilcox for Landon Collins right now. Yes it's hard to believe, but I'd do it. Going out on a limb here. Too bad church and Wilcox are free agents. :muttley:

I don't think we're getting enough back in return there. Collins is meh compared to them!

Mo has more upside than any other corner on the roster. He might cost a lot more to keep so you may have considered that in your post as s reason for him to walk. If I am keeping one of Mo or Carr I keep Mo even if it costs more to do it.

Sadly I think the best move is a low money Mo resigning.

It definitely has the best possibility of upside. He was playing pretty well earlier this year when he was healthy.

It might even be smart to give him a 3 year mid tier deal and hope that he can play at a top quarter level, which he can do if he stays healthy.

When has he ever played at a top quarter level?

The very minimum for a functional secondary, is three good corners. Keeping Carr and Claiborne, and mixing with Brown and Scandrick, makes for a solid core at corner. This could free up, with an adjusted cap, room to target two defensive linemen at the top of the next draft.

SS isn't important enough to spend significant resources on. It's not a particularly difficult spot on the defense to fill either and Church likely gets a contract in the neighborhood of $4mil per year average. Too much for me, especially for a guy who's 29 and wasn't all that athletic to start with.

Wilcox would be fine at 4y/$9mil incl. $2.5mil SB. He's just not a FS.
