That's cash, not cap space. I don't care about Jerry's cash.

Nor should anyone with half a brain. The man is a billionaire. He doesn't need the fans worrying about his ultimate bottom line. I'm about 99.999% sure it will be fine, regardless of Tony Romo's $14M.

You cannot ignore the rest of Romo's $54 cap figure. Just because they only get $5 M now, doesn't mean that's all they can spend. They have another $25 M for 2018 and 2019 that they can use to backload contracts for prospective free agents.

There is no logical reason to waste 14.5% of the 2017 salary cap on a backup QB. That's just dumb.

Right! And accelerates $8.9 M in bonuses into this cap year, thus only $5.1 M in savings.
That's not actually what is happening.

And any cap charges associated with bonus money for Romo is cap charge that is never leaving the cap. It's just accounting as to when it will hit the cap. And since we will have no problem getting under the cap irrespective of what we do with Romo the real number we need to be looking at and what other teams will be looking at is the 14mm number.

Yes. But those prorated dollars are sunken cost. They are owed no matter what you do with Romo.

We don't need 5mm in savings that a release would generate. Nice to have. Great. But we can manufacture cap space and manipulate any free agent we want irrespective of what we do with Romo.

So the real question is do you want to pay him 14mm or not. Or more accurately does a contender want to pay him 14mm.

Yes, I do want to pay him $14 million, because you can STILL manipulate money any way you want to get more space.

Plus, he's the best QB on the team.

OK that's a different claim than the $14mm is "cash not cap"... Which is a nonsensical statement.

And the Romo as a backup ship has said. Let it go.

What?! The total remaining cap hit(s) for Romo's current contract is a full $54 million over the next 3 years. You're really suggesting they take a 36 year old QB and kick that can FURTHER down the road ? Romo isn't taking less money. The NFLPA wouldn't even let him if he wanted to. So you want to convert more of his existing salary into a restructure bonus and extend him for 2 more years ?

Insane.
DAL is 60m under the cap next year .....restructuring Romo has to remain on the table

None of the money owed Romo is guaranteed so they could cut him next year and have around 17m in dead money compared to 19.6m this yea

It allows to either keep a great backup or trade him once the season starts and other teams get desperate

In season trade for q qb isn't happening.

This needs to get done before the draft.

It happens a lot....in fact we don't have a 5th because we traded for Cassel two years ago

I would rather wait and get a higher pick as teams get desperate after the Draft and if injuries strike

I want to trade him before the season starts but I am not taking anything off the table. including keeping him and/or restructuring his deal

Your example of something happening a lot is a late round trade for Cassel that happened two years ago?

Yes....is that too recent for this franchise for you to understand????
Player trades are rare. In season player trades are exceptionally rare.

This needs to happen before the draft so we can get compensation sooner rather than later and more often while Dak is cheap.

I would rather wait and get more........even if that means a conditional 2018 pick

you want to panic and take the first offer knock yourself out...... and you get minimal salary cap relief.........dumb and dumber

The cost of Romo on the roster this year so 14mm in used cap space.

How is that minimal?

24.7m- 19.6m = 5.1m.............out of all the scenarios this is the lowest.....ie minimal
That's the calculation if his salary is 0. Also known as Romo is not on the roster. Also known as you have not held onto him looking for a mid-season trade.
