I recall being laughed at for saying Taco looks like a three year project, hopefully he uses the off time to get stronger and quicker...

Normally, I'd chuckle to myself when someone gets a players name wrong, in a thread about said player, but considering the point you are making, it actually is fitting. Kind of Ironic in a way.

To some extent, it's apples and oranges. All of the linemen played right away because we were bad upfront, like really bad. Byron Jones played right away because he was versatile enough to play 3 positions, CB, Slot, FS. Anthony Brown played right away, in large part due to injury. While DE was a weakness for us, I do think we have a group of guys that would at least be rotational players on most teams. Lawrence would start on a number of teams with the way he's playing and Crawford would play on several teams as a LDE or 3T, Moore has always had talent, but was a knuckle head. Mayowa and Tapper wouldn't start, but would see snaps. So Taco, who may never been more than a rotational guy himself, is going to take time to earn those practice reps and ultimately game reps.

Actually all of them played a lot and early because they merited playing time. That's not the case with Taco.

you know..

Our #1 pick under Parcells that did a belly flop on the field?

I'm getting the vibe from the organization that they are not that pleased with him.

He's having trouble getting on the field..

and when he's on the field..

He disappears.

Is this another monumental mistake?

Or like Tank..

have to wait 3 years before his new contract comes around?

I really think he should be playing.

All of our rookie #1's have played right away

Byron Jones

The Beard

Tyrone Smith

Zach Martin

Anthony Brown (note not a #1)

This bothers me.

Comments?

I hated the Caroenter pick when it was made. It smelled of nepotism. It was a waste of a high first round pick.

virtually all the draft experts had Carpenter exactly where we picked him. Mid first rd.

he ticked off all the boxes: played at a major BCs school for several years.
Had the measurables.
Interviewed well.

and it has been shown that the sons of NFL players do better in the NFL then those without any connections.

It was called a very safe pick at the time.

Just turned out to be a bust. Sometimes that happens no matter how careful you are.

And remember BP had had good luck before picking the sons of former players.

Still not ready to write off Charlton yet, but this pick smells more and more like nothing more than a position reach in the draft based solely on need.

This guy is a project.

Just like Jayson Smith has been.

It's gong to take reps..

weight work

and lots of film room from him.

I have no idea.

I assume Marinelli signed off on the pick

It's his job to make it work.

Most DEs are 3 year projects usually by the end of year 1 they have flashes and show up on film, by the end of year two they are still inconsistent but you have better idea of what that player is going to be, by year 3 it comes together and you know what you have. Injuries or suspensions in there can move that time table back.

It's DLaw's 4th year and many fans just now quit calling him a bust.

Fans said Roy Williams was better than Ed Reed for a couple of years.

Fans whined that the Cowboys should have drafted Merriman instead of Ware at this point in Ware's career. Somebody even bumped an old thread about it a few weeks ago.

Due to injuries this is technically his year 3

By the end of year two everyone with a brain and without an agenda knew we had gone the right way on Ware.

Yeah we could wait until 10 years after the last game played to evaluate a player and have not only the benefit of hindsight, but also be pretty confident said player won't be called to play again. Then again that wouldn't be any fun.

It is true that it is too early to call certain players busts but I think it is appropriate to talk about where they are and the prospects for getting better.

Not really.

The concerns about Carpenter when he got drafted was his athletic ability. In the end, he had the athleticism, he was just incredibly soft.

The concerns with Taco are more technique oriented. I don't think he's soft, but he's just got a long way to go technique wise.

No. He doesn't remind me of Carpenter. Carpenter made more plays than Taco has so far.

I’ve been under the wait and see approach as he’s a rookie who prbly needed a year or so to start maybe being a difference maker

But holy hell at him having a terrible game again against a skins oline that was decimated
