It's a shame the NFL became a venue for politics and social protest, please don't do the same with the cowboyszone

its a shame extremism is tolerable and accepted.

The nfl is made of human beings and many of them come from poor urban backgrounds in many instances the focal points of hate from these extremists.

I watch the nfl for the players and the game not the damn rich owners or administrative front office members.

its a shame so many view them as garbage who without football would be working at mcdonalds (as if that makes them less human) as I have read here repeatedly.

False as in the conclusion made from the premises.

You have hundreds.of thousands of people in major nfl markets that suffered storm damage. Are they buying sheetrock and carpet or nfl gear?

Oh, so now it's the storms? It's almost as if there haven't been any storms any other year. I mean, really?

In order to prove merchandise sales have a significant chance of showing kneeling repercussions you would need to show nfl ratings/viewership dropping off more than the trend and you would need to show nfl attendance dropping like a rock instead of holding historically stable. Nfl attendance is quoted as actual tickets scanned, not sold.

You're struggling to show that the drop in sales, viewership, etc is caused by anything other than the major issue the NFL is currently facing. Quite frankly, folks are sticking their heads int he sand, especially at the NFL, because they already got paid; the TV contracts are signed, the seat licenses and season tickets are paid, the new stadiums have been approved and are being built by funds subsidized by the local tax base (in many cases, not all). It's why the NFL has been slow to act. They're hoping they can ride the storm out until the next TV contract is negotiated.

Also, this isn't anything new. Many sports leagues don't determine attendance by how many tickets come thought the turnstile. They determine them by tickets sold. It's why you see stadiums half full but they're not blacked out because, technically, they "sold out."

Attendance figures that count tickets sold, not turnstile clicks, make it hard for fans to reconcile what they hear with the empty seats they see

http://www.latimes.com/la-sp-attendance-082305-story.html

"The NFL traditionally has permitted a team to announce whatever attendance figures it chose, including no-shows. However, the league distributed a memo this month encouraging teams to limit their announcement to tickets sold."[\quote]

How Sports Attendance Figures Speak Lies

https://www.forbes.com/sites/sports...s-attendance-figures-speak-lies/#473631d52b2a

Paid Attendance is not “attendance”

If you followed the business of sports, you’ll know that about 20 years ago, the move to count tickets sold, as opposed to turnstile clicks, became what is reported in the boxscores. The reason – wholly done for accounting purposes for the clubs – showed what matters to owners most: money.[\quote]

Most nfl fans are true fans and won't change their fandom over side drama. Most couldnt care less.

You can keep your head in the sand, but the numbers tell a different story. NFL fans are still fans of their team but that doesn't mean they'll spend money or support the NFL in general. You're debating a topic as if the NFL is business as usual.

No he didn't. Only a few loudmouthed fans are complaining. Most don't care. Survey data shows that less than 5% said kneeling would stop them from watching/attending. And I'd bet half those 5% we're posturing.

Can you refer me to where you got those numbers?

agree with some of what you write. I would though venture to say that the vast vast vast majority of people who looked to football as a pure escape from everyday life and were disappointed it was invaded by politics and social protest are not extremists. People who felt offended by what they perceived as disrespect to the flag and anthem are not extremists. You shouldn't carelessly label and identify people you don't know - maybe they deserve a chance at being understood and "tolerated".

I believe there are many factors impacting NFL viewership, this being one of them.

Agreed. The biggest problem is the onfield product and the hype the league generates. No sport can live up to it. Yeah, the rules and application are mind numbing.

Agreed, my interest had waned long before any anthem controversy came along.

I can buy that there are many factors that can be contributing to the decline in viewership. But the current issue certainly doesn't help and many folks might look at it like the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back. Personally, I've lost a lot of my enthusiasm for football and I'm absolutely disgusted that folks brought these issues into the game.

Also, I'm not sure how accurate these numbers are in the link but ticket and merchandise sales are down. If the decline in viewership was because of cable cutting, you'd think it wouldn't affect the other areas as much as it has. Bottom line, folks are souring on the NFL.

Actually, television ratings are down for EVERYTHING.

Under 30 folks are way more interested in their phone than they are TV.

A TV is just a Netflix player for them.

The overwelming reason is because of the kneeling. Don't let all the side issues fool you. If you don't believe me go out in the general public and do your own survey.

I took in the game last night at local bar. The game wasn't on when I arrived. When I asked the bar tender for it, he said he quit watching specifically because of these issues. Luckily he still cut it on for me.

Sorry, not trying to get political or say it's right or wrong. Just acknowledging that people are actually tuning out because of it.

I hear you. I didn't see a second of the game last night and reading on CZ, it looks like it was a great one. I'm just not tuning in like I used to.

I didn't either. I came on the zone around 11:00 and read the game thread but that was about it.
same here.....I'm finding this has become a common approach, stay close to your team and an arms length to everything else. Cancelling packages that include NFLN, Redzone, ESPN, Sunday Ticket and saving cash has happened in droves. Maybe they're trying the streaming route but a dent from this all has been made
